How to make it

The same eight steps, whatever base, colour, or fragrance you picked.

  1. Cut your soap base into small cubes. Smaller pieces melt more evenly and quickly.
  2. Melt it. Microwave in 20–30 second bursts, stirring between each, until fully liquid — or use a double boiler on the stove.
  3. Add your fragrance oil. About 4–5ml per 100g of base, once it's cooled slightly. Stir gently to avoid bubbles.
  4. Add your colour. A few drops at a time, mixing until you reach the shade you want.
  5. Pour into your mould. A light spritz of rubbing alcohol on top pops any surface bubbles.
  6. Press in a few dried rose petals while the surface is still soft, for a decorative finish.
  7. Let it set. About 1–2 hours at room temperature, or 20–30 minutes in the fridge.
  8. Unmould. Gently flex the mould and your soap should pop right out.

A couple of tips

Work quickly once the base is melted — it starts to set within minutes. If it hardens before you're done, just re-melt it in short bursts.

The gloves and spatula are there to handle the melted base cleanly — it's not dangerously hot, just easier with the right tools.

A lot of soap sellers started with one kit.
