Quick answer: Which carrier oil for lavender is best? Depends on where you're putting it. Face, and oily skin especially? Jojoba. Sweet almond for a body massage. Fractionated coconut for roll ons and pillow blends, since it stays light and doesn't go off quickly. Coconut or jojoba for your scalp. Mix around 6 drops of lavender essential oil per 30 ml of carrier for the face, and 12 drops for the body.

Funny thing. People spend ages choosing the "right" lavender oil and then grab whatever oil is in the kitchen to mix it with. Mustard oil. Refined sunflower. Sometimes the dregs of an old hair oil bottle.
Searches for carrier oil for lavender have gone up more than 40 times in a year in India, so clearly a lot of you are now asking the right question. I work in our certified manufacturing facility in Nimbri, Panipat, where we make and test both lavender essential oil and carrier oils. Here's how we'd actually pair them.
Why does lavender essential oil need a carrier oil at all?
Because neat lavender is too strong for skin. Simple as that.
Essential oils are concentrated. A single drop of lavender carries what came out of a big bunch of flowers. Put it straight on skin, especially over and over, and you raise the chance of irritation. And it gets worse with age. Linalool, the main molecule, reacts with air over time, and that oxidised version can make skin allergic. Dilute it and much less of it ever reaches you.
The carrier isn't just there to water things down, either. A few drops of lavender spread much further in it. The scent lingers longer. And depending on what you choose, you also get moisture for skin or softness for hair. So the carrier oil for lavender isn't filler. It's half the product.
One thing that doesn't work? Water. The drops just sit on the surface like a film, so whatever you splash on is basically neat lavender again.
Which carrier oil for lavender suits each use?
Honestly? No one oil wins everywhere. It depends where it's going.
Face first. Oily, or prone to breakouts? I'd reach for jojoba. Technically it's not even a normal oil. Roughly 97 percent of it is wax esters, quite like the stuff your skin makes, so it feels light and soaks in quickly. It also holds up longer than most plant oils, so a face blend made with it won't turn stale in a hurry.
Body massage? Sweet almond, every time. Good slip, gentle, kind to dry skin. Hate that oily feeling afterwards? Grapeseed is lighter.
For your hair and scalp, coconut oil is the Indian default and still a great one. Jojoba is lighter if your scalp is oily. Both were the carriers in the hair studies we looked at in our guide to lavender oil for hair.
For sleep roll ons, wrist rubs and pillow blends, fractionated coconut oil wins. Even in December it stays runny, it barely smells of anything, and it's less likely to mark your sheets.
Older or really dry skin on the face can take something richer, like rosehip or argan. Small amounts though. These two go off faster, so keep them cool.
Which RV Organica carrier oil for lavender would we pick?
Golden Jojoba Oil (for the face)
Our golden jojoba oil has a 5 star average from its first 3 reviews. For a lavender face oil, this is the carrier oil for lavender I'd point you to, more so if you're oily or get pimples. And since you'll only use a few drops a day, it helps that it doesn't go stale fast.
Sweet Almond Oil, the massage one
Our sweet almond oil has 3 reviews so far, averaging 4.33 stars. It smells faintly nutty and feels soft, lovely for a slow rub after a bath. Nut allergy? Then give this one a miss.
Fractionated Coconut Oil, the roll on one
Two reviews, 4.5 stars for our fractionated coconut oil. Normal coconut oil goes solid when it's cold. This one doesn't. That's why we like it for roll ons in your bag or on the bedside table.
Grapeseed Oil, the non greasy one
Five people have rated our grapeseed oil, 4.4 stars on average. It's about as light as carriers get. Good if oily skin feels gross to you. Make small batches, since it spoils sooner than jojoba.
Lavender Essential Oil (to mix into all of these)
And the lavender itself. Our lavender essential oil is steam distilled from Lavandula angustifolia flower tops and has 4.5 stars from 10 reviews. You'll find the full range of bases in our carrier oils collection.
How many drops of lavender per carrier oil should you use?
Here's the rough rule we use with any carrier oil for lavender, assuming about 20 drops per ml. In 30 ml of carrier, 3 drops gives you about 0.5 percent, which is good for very sensitive skin or older people. Six drops is about 1 percent, the right level for your face. Twelve drops is 2 percent, fine for body massage and scalp oils. Eighteen drops is roughly 3 percent, which is only for short term use on a small area, like a stiff shoulder.
Working in a 10 ml roll on bottle? Divide by three. So 2 drops for the face, 4 for the body. Our essential oil dilution calculator does the maths for any size if you'd rather not count.
Patch test, please. A dab of the final blend inside your elbow, then a 24 hour wait.
Will your carrier oil decide how long the blend lasts?
Yes, a lot. Your carrier oil for lavender decides how long the blend stays fresh, and most guides leave this out.
Carrier oils go rancid at different speeds, and that depends on their fats. Grapeseed oil, for example, is 58 to 78 percent linoleic acid under the Codex standard for named vegetable oils (CXS 210-1999). Linoleic acid is great for skin, but it oxidises fairly fast. Rosehip is similar. Jojoba and both kinds of coconut oil hold up far better.
So, in real life? Mix lavender into grapeseed or rosehip and you've got a few weeks. In jojoba or fractionated coconut, months, if you look after it. Dark glass bottle. Cap screwed on. Nowhere near the window or the stove. Adding a few drops of vitamin E oil to a delicate carrier buys you a bit more time.
Does it smell bitter now, or a bit like old paint? It's gone rancid. Bin it, especially if it was meant for your face.
Is mustard oil or a kitchen oil okay as a carrier?
It works, sort of. Not ideal though.
Sarson ka tel has such a strong, pungent smell that you'll barely notice the lavender, and on the face some people find it hot or irritating. For an old school body malish, if you're used to it, fine. Just don't expect much lavender. Til oil is okay for the body but feels heavy. Refined sunflower is light, yet turns rancid fast. And olive oil is thick and smells of itself, so keep it for the body.
Making something for your face? Go for a skin grade carrier oil for lavender, jojoba for instance. Cooking oils were never meant to sit on your cheeks all night.
Can brands buy carrier oils and lavender together?
Yes. Plenty of brands making face oils, massage oils, roll ons and hair oils buy their carrier oil for lavender blends from us, along with the lavender itself. RV Organica supplies lavender essential oil and carrier oils from small bottles up to 25 kg drums, from the same facility, with a COA and MSDS for each batch. That makes formulation easier, since you're working with one supplier and one set of documents. For leave on products, follow IFRA (International Fragrance Association) limits for lavender in that category. For bulk quotes, email info@rvorganica.com.

What else do people ask about carrier oil for lavender?
Can lavender oil be mixed with coconut oil?
Of course. In India it's probably the most common mix there is. Plain coconut oil is great on hair and body. Face? Test a patch first, because it clogs some people's pores. Or use fractionated coconut, which is lighter.
Does olive oil work as a carrier for lavender?
On the body, sure. It's heavy, though, and it smells like olive oil. On the face, jojoba or grapeseed feel lighter, and you'll actually smell the lavender.
Can water be a carrier for lavender oil?
No. The oil won't dissolve, it just floats, and you're back to putting neat lavender on skin. Making a spray? Add witch hazel or alcohol to help it spread, and shake hard every time.
How long will a lavender and carrier oil blend last?
Depends on the carrier. In jojoba or fractionated coconut, kept in dark glass away from heat, several months. In grapeseed or rosehip, use it up in a few weeks.
Which carrier oil is best for a lavender roll on?
Fractionated coconut is the best carrier oil for lavender roll ons, in my view. It stays liquid in winter, doesn't have much smell of its own and is light on skin. Jojoba comes a close second.
Final Thoughts
Your carrier oil for lavender matters just as much as the lavender. Get that bit right. For most people it boils down to jojoba on the face, sweet almond for massage, fractionated coconut in roll ons, and coconut or jojoba on the scalp. Go easy on the drops. Store the blend well. And with fragile oils, mix small amounts at a time. These observations come from working inside a certified manufacturing facility, where we see every week how a good carrier turns a decent lavender oil into a blend people actually enjoy using.
