Quick answer: Cinnamon oil for hair growth looks promising in animal studies, where it boosted scalp blood flow and hair length, but there are no solid human trials yet. If you want to try it, use only a few drops in a carrier oil on the scalp, once or twice a week, after a patch test. It works best as one part of a scalp routine, not as a cure for hair loss.

Somebody on Instagram says cinnamon oil grew back her hairline in a month. The comments are full of heart eyes. So you buy a bottle, mix it with coconut oil the way she did, and by the second night your scalp is tingling a bit too much.
Is cinnamon oil for hair growth a real thing, or another viral myth? The honest answer sits in the middle.
I work at our certified manufacturing facility in Nimbri, Panipat, where we distil, test and fill essential oils, including cinnamon leaf oil. A lot of what's below comes from the research itself. The rest comes from customers who message us after their scalp told them they'd used too much.
How is cinnamon oil supposed to help hair grow?
The theory is about circulation. Cinnamaldehyde, the main molecule in cinnamon bark oil, is a warming compound. It makes skin feel hot and draws blood to the surface. More blood flow to the scalp means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the follicles. That's the idea. (New to the oil itself? Our main cinnamon oil guide explains the types first.)
There's a second angle. Cinnamon contains procyanidins, plant compounds that some older studies linked to hair growth. And both cinnamaldehyde and eugenol are antifungal, so they may calm the flaky, itchy scalp that often comes with shedding.
None of that is the same as proof. It's a mechanism that makes sense on paper.
What does the research actually show?
The study everyone quotes is from 2018. Researchers applied cinnamon oil to the skin of male rats and found it increased hair length about as well as 2 percent minoxidil, the standard over the counter hair loss treatment. That's an interesting result. It's also a rat study.
A 2024 study from Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia built a cinnamon oil nanoemulsion serum and tested it on rabbits over 28 days. Hair grew longer and heavier than with ordinary oils, and the serum didn't irritate the animals' skin. Another Indonesian study mixed cinnamon oil with virgin coconut oil in a hair tonic at 1, 3 and 5 percent. The 5 percent version beat the positive control in rabbits.
Notice the pattern? Rats. Rabbits. Lab formulas. Not people with thinning hair in Delhi or Pune. Health writers at Healthline and the hair clinic Wimpole both reach the same conclusion: interesting early data, not enough human evidence. I agree with them.
Want oils with stronger human evidence? Rosemary has a small human trial behind it. Our guide on which essential oil is best for hair growth ranks the options by proof.
Which cinnamon oil should you use on your scalp?
Here's a catch nobody mentions. Most of the hair studies used oils rich in cinnamaldehyde, which means bark or cassia type. But bark oil is also the type most likely to burn your scalp.
Leaf oil is gentler because it's mostly eugenol. You give up a little of the warming punch. You gain a lot of safety. For a home scalp blend, that's a trade I'd take every time. Our cinnamon leaf essential oil holds 4.6 stars from 5 reviews and is the one we'd point you to.
The carrier matters nearly as much. Dry scalp? virgin coconut carrier oil spreads well and feels nourishing. Oily scalp? golden jojoba oil sits closer to your own sebum and won't weigh the roots down.
How do you use cinnamon oil for hair growth safely?
Keep the dose tiny. One drop of cinnamon leaf oil in two teaspoons of carrier oil, about 10 ml, lands near 0.5 percent. That's enough. Going stronger won't grow hair faster. It just raises your odds of a red, itchy scalp.
Patch test first. Dab the mix on the inside of your forearm and wait a full day. Any redness or itch means stop.
Then the routine. Part your hair in sections. Use your fingertips, not your nails, and massage the oil into the scalp for five minutes. The massage itself helps circulation too, and that's not nothing. Leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes, then shampoo. Twice a week is plenty. Never overnight with cinnamon.
Want a blend? Add two drops of rosemary to that same 10 ml. Rosemary and cinnamon get paired a lot online, and rosemary brings the better evidence. Don't go above that total. And give it three months before you judge anything, because hair grows slowly no matter what you put on it.
Who should skip cinnamon oil on the scalp?
Skip it if you have eczema or psoriasis on the scalp, open sores, or a fresh hair colour or chemical treatment. Skip it if you're pregnant, and don't use it on children. If you've ever reacted to cinnamon in food, toothpaste or chewing gum, skip it too, because that allergy carries over.
Sudden patchy hair loss, heavy shedding after illness, or a receding hairline in your twenties needs a dermatologist. Oils won't fix thyroid, iron deficiency or genetic hair loss. More on reactions in our guide to cinnamon oil side effects.
What do the numbers say about safe scalp dilution?
The Tisserand Institute's 2015 survey of 345 users found that undiluted cinnamon bark and cassia oils caused far more skin reactions than diluted ones. Their advice was to keep these oils at 1 percent or less. For leaf oil, the safety reference Essential Oil Safety suggests a skin maximum of about 0.6 percent.
So the 0.5 percent scalp blend above sits just under that line, on purpose. Roughly 20 drops make up 1 ml, so 1 drop per 10 ml is about 0.5 percent, and 2 drops per 10 ml is about 1 percent. For cinnamon, stay at the first number. Our guide to diluting essential oils has the full table.

What else do people ask about cinnamon oil for hair?
Does cinnamon oil really regrow hair?
Not proven in people. Animal studies showed more hair growth, in one case on par with 2 percent minoxidil, but human trials are missing. It may support a healthier scalp. It won't regrow lost hair from genetic thinning.
How many drops of cinnamon oil should I add to hair oil?
One drop per 10 ml of carrier oil, which is about 0.5 percent. For a 100 ml bottle of hair oil, that's ten drops at most. Shake well before every use because essential oils don't stay evenly mixed.
Can I mix cinnamon oil with coconut oil for hair?
Yes, and coconut is a good base for a dry scalp. Keep the ratio at one drop of cinnamon leaf oil per 10 ml of coconut oil, massage it in and wash it out within an hour.
Can cinnamon oil lighten hair colour?
No. That's a myth from cinnamon powder masks mixed with honey or conditioner, and even those do very little. Cinnamon oil won't dye or lighten your hair.
Is cinnamon oil good for dandruff?
It may help a little because it's antifungal in lab tests, but tea tree has much better evidence for dandruff. If flakes are your main problem, our tea tree oil for hair guide is the better read.
Final Thoughts
Cinnamon oil for hair growth is a hopeful idea backed by animals, not yet by people. If you're curious, try it the careful way: leaf oil, half a percent, twice a week, and a good massage. These observations come from working inside a certified manufacturing facility, and the customers who stay happy with cinnamon on their scalp are always the ones who used less, not more.
