Quick answer: Clove oil for toothache works thanks to eugenol. It numbs the spot, usually for an hour or two. Mix a drop or two of clove bud oil into a teaspoon of carrier oil and dab it on with cotton. Then book the dentist anyway, because quiet pain isn't the same as a fixed tooth.

Picture this. Late night, one molar is going thud thud thud, every chemist nearby has pulled the shutter down and your dentist's earliest slot is Monday.

So you go looking for laung. Almost every Indian home has a story about cloves and tooth pain, usually from a grandmother. The story is mostly right. The method people use is often wrong.

This guide is written from inside our essential oil manufacturing facility in Nimbri, Panipat. We distil clove oil here. We bottle it here. Our phone rings about it most weeks too, so none of this is copied off some other website.

Why do most people use clove oil for toothache the wrong way?

Strength. Everyone thinks more is better, right? So the bottle gets tipped straight onto the gum.

Bad move, honestly. Pour it neat and your gum can get scalded. Sometimes it goes white. Sometimes it ends up hurting more than the tooth! A diluted drop placed right on the tooth does the job better. Trust me, we've had customers call after finding that out the hard way.

What makes clove oil for toothache actually work?

Eugenol is the reason. It's a mild numbing compound, and most of what's in a clove oil bottle is eugenol anyway. It quietens the nerve endings near the surface for a while.

There's a germ fighting side to it as well. Researchers writing a 2020 review on clove (Syzygium aromaticum), which sits on PubMed Central, the NIH's open archive, went through its pain easing and anti-inflammatory actions and pointed to studies done on tooth pain (El-Saber Batiha et al., 2020, PMC7072209).

And it's not only lab work. Back in 2006 the Journal of Dentistry ran a trial ("The effect of clove and benzocaine versus placebo as topical anesthetics") where a clove gel did about as well as 20% benzocaine, which is what you'll find inside most numbing gels at the chemist. Funny enough, dentists still pack zinc oxide eugenol into temporary fillings. Same idea, decades old.

How do you use clove oil for toothache step by step?

Rinse first. Warm water, pinch of salt, swish. Food stuck near the tooth can keep the pain going.

Then grab a small clean katori and pour in a teaspoon of carrier oil. Fractionated coconut or sweet almond, either is fine. One or two drops of clove bud oil go in, give it a stir.

Dip a cotton bud in it. Now press it softly against the sore tooth, also touching the gum just beside it, and keep it there for roughly five to ten minutes (count it out on your phone timer if you're impatient like me). Spit out whatever's left. Yes, spit, not swallow.

You'll feel it get warm. Bit tingly. Then kind of heavy and numb. Totally normal. But a sharp sting? Wipe it off. Next time, add more carrier.

Pain back? Go again, every two or three hours. Still at it after two days? Then the oil has done what it can, and the rest is your dentist's job.

How many drops of clove oil should you mix for a toothache?

Quick bit of maths, promise it's painless. One teaspoon, 5 ml. That's around 100 drops of oil. So drop in one drop of clove and you've made yourself a 1% mix, more or less. Two drops gives you about 2%.

For adults, 1 to 2% is plenty for a sore tooth. Going higher doesn't numb much faster. It just raises the chance of gum burn.

Using whole cloves? Bite down on one, gently, right by the bad tooth. Or just park it there. Takes longer than the oil. For a small ache I'd say that's fine.

What do the technical numbers say about clove bud oil and clove leaf oil?

Here's something most buyers don't know. "Clove oil" isn't one thing. Bud, leaf and stem oils are separate products from separate parts of the tree.

Bud oil is made from dried flower buds. Eugenol? Usually 70 to 90% in there. There's eugenyl acetate too, which is why bud oil smells a little rounder. Leaf oil costs less. It can carry plenty of eugenol too, but also more beta caryophyllene, and you'll notice a rougher, almost smoky note. I came across one published test on clove leaf oil from Indonesia that read 75.22% eugenol, which actually missed that country's own SNI 06-2387-2006 minimum of 78%. That's why a batch report matters.

For anything that goes near your mouth, pick bud oil. What we sell as clove bud essential oil is steam distilled from buds only, no fillers. Our clove leaf essential oil, on the other hand, I'd save for soaps, a diffuser or a room spray.

Which RV Organica oils go into a toothache relief kit?

Clove bud oil. The one doing the actual work. Hot, spicy smell. Numbs quick. A 100 ml bottle? You'll be using it for ages, honestly, because it's a drop at a time.

Fractionated coconut oil. Stays runny even in a Panipat winter. Hardly any smell. Light in the mouth. If you ask me which carrier to pair it with, it's our fractionated coconut oil nine times out of ten.

Sweet almond oil. Gentle and slightly nutty. When coconut isn't your thing, our sweet almond oil works nicely. Nut allergy? Then give this one a miss.

Golden jojoba oil. Fun fact, it's really a liquid wax. Lasts long without going off. Like keeping a ready mix near your bed? Then golden jojoba oil is the one.

Want to see them side by side? Our carrier oils collection has all of them.

Is laung ka tel the same as clove oil?

Yes. Laung ka tel and lavang tel are simply the everyday Indian names for clove oil. People search for daant dard ke liye laung ka tel because the remedy is so old here.

Small warning though. Plenty of local market bottles turn out to be leaf oil, or a little clove mixed into til oil. No "bud" on the label? Ask the shopkeeper. Straight up.

How do you stop a toothache at night with clove oil?

Ever noticed tooth pain gets nastier once you lie flat? More blood rushes up toward your head, that's partly why. An extra pillow under your head helps a bit.

Do the clove oil routine maybe 15 minutes before you sleep. Take the cotton out before you sleep though. It can slide back. Nobody wants a mouthful of clove oil at 3 am. An ice pack on the cheek, wrapped in a cloth, for about 15 minutes? That helps too.

Who should avoid clove oil for toothache?

Not everyone should be using this. Kids first. Eugenol swallowed by a small child can be dangerous, so the bottle goes on the top shelf. If you're expecting or feeding a baby, ask your doctor before trying it.

Anyone taking blood thinners or living with a bleeding disorder needs to go slow here, since eugenol might slow down clotting. Got an extraction or surgery coming up? Stop about two weeks ahead, unless your dentist tells you something different. Ever broken out in a rash from cloves? Don't use it then.

When should you see a dentist instead of using clove oil?

Clove oil gives temporary relief. Your cavity's still there after the numbness wears off. Same with an abscess. A cracked tooth, too.

Two days of pain and counting? Puffy face, swollen gum, fever? Call the dentist. Pus, or a foul taste that keeps coming back, counts too. And if the swelling is creeping up toward your eye or down toward your throat, please don't wait at all. Go today.

Can businesses buy clove oil in bulk for oral care products?

Yes. Toothpowder makers use it. So do herbal toothpaste brands, mouthwash brands, even the people making little Ayurvedic daant drops. Anyone making these needs oil that smells and tests the same every single batch, plus the documents to prove it.

We supply clove bud oil to private label and wholesale buyers, anywhere from 100 ml up to 25 kg. RV Organica holds nine certifications in total, among them ISO 22000, HACCP, Halal, Kosher, FDA and MSME recognition. Ask, and a Certificate of Analysis comes with your batch.

How do you buy pure clove oil in India?

Three checks before you pay. Does the label say bud? Was it steam distilled? Can the seller show you a COA with a eugenol number on it? Price alone tells you very little.

You can order our clove bud oil directly at rvorganica.com. Free shipping kicks in once your order crosses ₹999, and first time buyers get something extra with the code FIRSTORDER. FAQs on clove oil for toothache

Can I put 100% clove oil on my tooth?

I wouldn't. Undiluted, it can burn your gum and the inside of your cheek. A few people dab a single neat drop on the tooth itself when it's really bad. I get it. Still, 1 to 2% numbs nearly as well and won't burn you.

How long does clove oil take to work on toothache?

Five, maybe ten minutes. Relief lasts an hour or two for most people. Bit longer sometimes. Depends what's actually wrong with the tooth.

How long should I leave clove oil on my tooth?

Five to ten minutes does it. After that, take the cotton out and spit. Keeping it there for hours won't numb you more, it'll just annoy your gum.

What happens if clove oil touches your gums?

If it's diluted, nothing bad, and that's kind of the idea anyway. Heat first, then numb. Neat oil though? Burning, redness, maybe a white spot. Rinse with water quickly if that happens.

Can I sleep with clove in my mouth?

Better not. Whole clove or oily cotton, either one can slip toward your throat once you're asleep. Do your application before bed, take everything out, and sleep with your head propped up.

Final thoughts

Of all the gharelu nuskhe for tooth pain, clove oil for toothache is one of the few with real studies behind it. Costs next to nothing, kicks in fast, gets you through till your appointment. That's really all it promises. Dilute it, stick to bud oil, and let it carry you to the dentist rather than replace them.

Everything here comes from working inside a certified essential oil manufacturing facility, and clove bud oil is honestly one of the bottles we fill most.
