Quick answer: In shea butter vs cocoa butter for skin, shea is softer, gentler and less likely to clog pores, so it suits most dry and sensitive skin, including the face in small amounts. Cocoa butter is harder, richer and naturally scented, and works best on the body for very dry patches, rough heels and stretching skin. Many people use shea every day and save cocoa for winter nights.

RV Organica Shea Butter and Cocoa Body Butter jars side by side with glass bowls of each butter, shea nuts and cocoa beans on white marble

Put a spoon of each in front of most people and they can't tell them apart. Both are pale, both are butters, both promise to fix dry skin.

Then they rub them in. Shea melts and glides. Cocoa butter skids at first, then melts all at once and leaves a faint chocolate smell on your wrists.

This comparison is written from inside a certified butter and carrier oil facility in Nimbri, Panipat. We handle both butters by the drum, and the differences below come from how they behave in our test batches and in the products our buyers make with them.

People usually ask which one is "better". That's the wrong question. They're built from different fatty acids, so they do different jobs on skin.

What makes shea butter and cocoa butter different?

Shea butter comes from the nuts of the shea tree, native to West Africa. It is soft at room temperature and carries roughly 40 to 55 percent oleic acid and 35 to 45 percent stearic acid.

Cocoa butter is pressed from cocoa beans. It contains roughly a third each of stearic, palmitic and oleic acid, and that balanced, saturated profile makes it hard and snappy at room temperature.

Shea also carries an unusually large unsaponifiable fraction, often several percent compared with under 1 percent in most plant oils. This fraction includes triterpenes and other compounds linked to shea's calming reputation. Cocoa butter's strength is different. It is a very effective film former that sits on skin and holds moisture in.

How do they feel and melt on skin?

Shea starts softening at around 32°C, so a scoop turns creamy within seconds in your palm. It spreads thinly and soaks in over ten to fifteen minutes.

Cocoa butter holds out until about 34 to 38°C, close to body temperature. That's why it can feel waxy at first and then suddenly go glossy. It leaves a heavier, longer lasting layer than shea.

Scent is the other giveaway. Unrefined cocoa butter smells of chocolate. Refined grades are milder. Shea has a faint nutty, smoky smell when raw, which some people love and others don't notice.

Which is better for dry skin, stretch marks and the face?

For general dry skin, both work. Shea is easier to spread over large areas and is the better daily butter. Cocoa is better on cracked heels, knuckles and elbows, where you want a thick, staying layer.

For stretching skin during weight change or pregnancy, cocoa butter is the traditional choice, mainly because it keeps skin soft and supple. Honest note: clinical trials have not shown that cocoa butter prevents stretch marks. A randomised trial published in BJOG in 2008 found no significant difference between cocoa butter cream and placebo in preventing pregnancy stretch marks. It still helps the skin feel less tight and itchy.

For the face, shea is the safer pick. Commonly cited comedogenic scales rate shea at 0 to 2 and cocoa butter at around 4 out of 5, meaning cocoa is more likely to block pores. We cover this in more detail in can you use body butter on your face.

Which RV Organica butters should you compare?

Shea Butter. Our raw shea butter is soft, creamy and easy to use straight from the jar or in recipes. It holds a 4.68 rating across 22 reviews, the most reviewed butter we sell.

Cocoa Butter. Our cocoa butter is firm, with a gentle chocolate note, and melts into a rich layer. Ten buyers rate it 4.7 out of 5. Grate or chop it before use, or warm the jar briefly.

Kokum Body Butter. If you like cocoa butter's hold but not its heaviness, try kokum butter. It's an Indian butter with a high stearic acid share, very firm in the jar but surprisingly light once rubbed in. Rated 4.64 from 14 buyers.

Can you mix shea butter and cocoa butter?

Yes, and it's one of the best home combinations. Shea brings softness, cocoa brings firmness and a longer finish. A blend of two parts shea to one part cocoa butter, plus some liquid oil, holds its shape in an Indian summer far better than shea alone.

Melt the cocoa butter first, because it needs more heat. Then add shea, then oil, then chill and whip. Full ratios and the anti graininess method are in our guide on how to make body butter at home.

Soap makers use both as well. Our comparison of shea butter soap for dry skin looks at how each behaves in a bar.

Are shea and cocoa butter better than lotion?

For dry skin, either butter used on damp skin usually outlasts a lotion, because a butter seals moisture in rather than adding water that later evaporates. Lotion still wins for oily skin and humid weather. Our pillar on body butter vs lotion explains the trade off.

Can cocoa butter clog pores?

It can. Cocoa butter is commonly rated as fairly comedogenic, so keep it off the face and off the back or chest if you break out easily.

In small amounts, yes, for most dry skin. Use a pea sized amount at night and stop if you notice new bumps.
