Cypress Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves, twigs and cones of Cupressus sempervirens, with a fresh, clean, woody and coniferous aroma. It is used in diffusers, diluted massage and body oils, men’s grooming products, deodorants, soaps, candles and perfumery. It is a clear to pale yellow, free-flowing liquid with a 24 month shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

Cypress Essential Oil is the aromatic oil recovered from the foliage and cones of the cypress tree by steam distillation. What is cypress essential oil and how is it made?

Cypress here means Cupressus sempervirens, the tall, slender evergreen often called Italian or Mediterranean cypress. It is a different plant from juniper, whose berries give our juniper berry essential oil, and from the blue cypress or Callitris trees, which give oils with other profiles. For this oil, the leaves, twigs and cones are harvested and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used.

Its scent comes mainly from α-pinene at 40 to 65 percent and δ-3-carene at 10 to 20 percent, with limonene, myrcene, β-pinene, cedrol and terpinolene in smaller amounts. α-Pinene gives the oil its crisp, resinous pine freshness, while δ-3-carene and cedrol add a sweeter, woodier, slightly smoky depth. ISO 20809:2017 specifies characteristics used to assess the quality of cypress essential oil, and the COA for your batch is the document to read against it.

What does cypress essential oil smell like?

Cypress smells fresh, clean and woody, with a balsamic, coniferous character like a walk through a pine and cedar forest after rain. It is crisper and drier than cedarwood and cleaner than pine, with a faint smoky sweetness underneath. It is a natural fit for fresh, outdoorsy and masculine blends.

How do you use cypress essential oil in a diffuser?

Add a few drops to a diffuser for a crisp, forest-fresh atmosphere. It suits studies, bathrooms, living rooms and workspaces, and it brings a clean, woody note to any blend. For a grounded woody mix, pair it with cedarwood essential oil or juniper berry essential oil. For a softer floral-woody one, add a little lavender essential oil.

How do you use cypress essential oil in body oils and massage blends?

Always dilute cypress oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. The right ratio depends on how much you are making and where it will be used, and our essential oil dilution calculator works it out for you. Once diluted, it adds a fresh, woody note to massage oils, body oils, foot soaks and bath products. Do a patch test first and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin.

Can you use cypress essential oil in soap, deodorants, candles and perfume?

Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. In natural deodorant and grooming recipes, it gives a fresh, clean, masculine scent. In candles and room sprays, test a small batch first, because light coniferous scents can fade quickly and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works as a fresh woody top-to-heart note, and it pairs well with cedarwood, juniper berry, lavender, bergamot, clary sage, sandalwood, frankincense and pine. What are the specifications of cypress essential oil?

The botanical name is Cupressus sempervirens, the CAS number is 8013-86-3 and the FEMA number is 2340. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.870 to 0.885 at 25°C, a refractive index of 1.469 to 1.478 at 25°C, a flash point above 62°C, an acid value of up to 1.5 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.5 percent. It is a clear to pale yellow, mobile liquid with a fresh, clean, woody, balsamic and coniferous odour. The shelf life is 24 months from the date of manufacture, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and practically insoluble in water.

How should you store cypress essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Pine-type oils oxidise with age, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate the skin, so close the cap straight after each use and use the oil within its shelf life. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full 24 month shelf life.

Is cypress essential oil safe to use?

Cypress essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, do a patch test first, and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin.
