Nutmeg Essential Oil is steam distilled from dried nutmeg seeds (Myristica fragrans), with a warm, sweet, spicy and slightly woody aroma. It is used in diffusers, diluted massage and body oils, soaps, candles, room sprays and warm spicy perfumes. It is a thin, colourless to pale yellow liquid with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.
Nutmeg Essential Oil is the aromatic oil recovered from dried nutmeg seeds by steam distillation. RV Organica’s Nutmeg Essential Oil is an Indian-origin, colourless to pale yellow, thin liquid with a rich, sweet-spicy scent, packed at our facility in Nimbri, Panipat, Haryana, and offered in sizes from 100 ml to 25 kg.
Nutmeg comes from Myristica fragrans, a tropical evergreen tree that gives two different spices. The seed kernel is nutmeg, and the lacy red covering around it, called the aril, is mace. Nutmeg oil is made from the dried seed kernels, which are ground and then steam distilled. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. Mace oil, made from the aril, smells similar but is a separate product.
The scent comes mainly from sabinene, α-pinene and β-pinene, which give a fresh, peppery lift, along with myristicin, which adds the characteristic warm, sweet nutmeg depth. ISO 3215:1998 describes quality characteristics for Indonesian-type nutmeg oil, and Indian nutmeg oil has a profile of its own, so the COA for your batch is the document to read for exact values.
Nutmeg smells warm, sweet and spicy, with a woody, slightly peppery freshness on top and a soft, almost creamy depth underneath, like freshly grated nutmeg. It is richer and rounder than black pepper and less sharp than clove. It brings a cosy, festive warmth to a blend, which is why it is a favourite in autumn and winter products.
Add one or two drops to a diffuser for a warm, comforting, spice-kitchen atmosphere. The scent is strong, so start with a very small amount. It suits living rooms, entrances and cool-weather evenings. For a sunny, festive blend, pair it with sweet orange essential oil, or with cinnamon leaf essential oil and clove leaf essential oil for a classic spice mix. Our spice oils collection has more combinations to try.
Always dilute nutmeg oil before it touches the skin, and use it sparingly. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. The right ratio depends on how much you are making and where it will be used, and our essential oil dilution calculator works it out for you. Once diluted, it adds a warm spice note to massage oils, body oils, balms and scrubs. Do a patch test first and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin.
Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. In candles and room sprays, test a small batch first, because spice scents are strong and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. Nutmeg is a popular note in autumn and winter candles. In perfumery it works as a warm spice accent in oriental, woody and gourmand compositions, and it pairs well with orange, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, ginger, frankincense, lavender and rosemary.
The botanical name is Myristica fragrans, the CAS number is 8008-45-9 and the FEMA number is 2793. The oil has a relative density of 0.884 at 25°C, a refractive index of 1.479, a flash point above 50°C, an acid value of up to 1.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, colourless to pale yellow, with a characteristic warm, spicy and sweet nutmeg odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.
Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Nutmeg oil has a low flash point, so store it away from flames and heat sources. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.
Nutmeg essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it, as nutmeg oil can be harmful if swallowed. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, use it in small amounts, do a patch test first, and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin. Keep it away from children and pets, and avoid use during pregnancy. If you are nursing or have any medical condition, consult a doctor before use. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Yes. The oil is available in 100 ml, 500 ml, 1 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg and 25 kg packs, which suits home users, small makers and manufacturers. COA and MSDS can be requested for each batch. For wholesale or private label enquiries, write to info@rvorganica.com.
