Amla Oil for Grey Hair: Can It Turn White Hair Black, and What Actually Helps?

Essential Oils Expert, RV Organica

RV Organica Amla Carrier Oil bottle with fresh amla fruits, a wooden wide-tooth comb with grey hair strands, and a brass bowl of oil on a rustic wooden table.

Quick answer: Will amla oil for grey hair make a white strand black again? Sadly, no. Once it's gone grey, it stays grey. The oil just makes those greys softer and less wiry, and your scalp feels better for it. Started greying in your early twenties? Get a B12 and thyroid test done first. Want actual colour? That's henna and indigo territory, with amla tagging along.

You're 24. There's a grey one near the parting. You yank it out, feel smug for a week, and then find two more. Somebody at home says "amla tel lagao," because amla oil for grey hair is the family answer, and that's the whole conversation.

Fair advice, honestly. Amla has been in Indian hair care for centuries. But the bottle won't do what most people hope it will, and nobody tells you that part.

We infuse and fill amla oil at our Panipat unit. A lot of the mails that come in about it are really about amla oil for white hair. Will it reverse it? How long before it works? Should I mix it with something? So here's what we answer, plainly.

People usually ask which amla oil for grey hair is "strongest." Wrong question, mostly. I'd rather know why you're greying. Some reasons can be fixed. Others won't move no matter what you rub in.

Why does hair turn grey in the first place?

Colour comes from melanin. Tiny pigment cells down in the root (melanocytes, if you want the word) make it. When they get lazy, you go grey. White happens when they stop.

Part of it is chemistry. In 2009 the FASEB Journal published work from a European team led by Karin Schallreuter. Hair follicles make a little hydrogen peroxide all the time. With age, the enzyme that clears it (catalase) drops off. The peroxide builds up and gets in the way of tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin. So hair, in a sense, bleaches itself from the inside.

Then there's your family. Genes decide a lot of this, more than any amla oil for grey hair ever will.

What counts as premature greying?

There's a rough rule dermatologists use. For Asians, greys showing up before 25 count as early. The cutoff is 20 for white people and 30 for people of African descent. So a few greys at 22 in Delhi? That's early.

In 2017 the Indian Journal of Dermatology published a study by Sidharth Sonthalia and colleagues on 71 patients with early greying at a Gurugram skin clinic. 90.1% of them had a parent or sibling who also greyed early. Their average vitamin B12 levels were significantly lower than normal. TSH was higher, which points towards an underactive thyroid in some.

What does that mean for you? Early grey hair is mostly inherited. But a blood test is worth doing, because B12 and thyroid problems are fixable, and fixing them matters far more than any amla oil for grey hair.

Can amla oil for grey hair turn white hair black again?

Not once a strand has gone fully white. The pigment cells in that root have quit. Rubbing oil on the scalp can't restart them.

Where does the belief come from? Old recipes almost never used plain amla. Your nani's version probably sat in an iron kadhai overnight. Or it went into mehendi with some indigo. Those combinations really do stain hair darker. Plain amla oil for white hair has no dye in it.

There's one interesting twist, though. A 2021 study in the journal eLife, from Martin Picard's team at Columbia University, mapped colour along single human hairs. Some recently greyed hairs got their colour back for a while when stress in the person's life dropped. Not all of them. And not hairs that had been white for years. It does tell you that very early greying isn't always a one way street.

What can amla oil for grey hair actually do?

Ever noticed greys feel different? Rougher. Sort of springy and dry. That's where amla oil for grey hair is genuinely useful. The oil lays the cuticle flat, so the comb glides and those stray greys stop sticking up.

It also keeps a dry scalp happy. Amla also brings polyphenols (gallic and ellagic acid are the ones researchers name), and in test tubes they act as antioxidants. Does that slow greying on a real head? Nobody has shown it in a proper human trial. I wouldn't promise it.

So think of amla oil for gray hair as care for the hair you have, not a reversal. That's still worth something. Our pillar guide on amla oil benefits and how to pick a pure one covers the rest of what it does.

How do you use amla oil for grey hair?

Using amla oil for grey hair is simple. Warm two teaspoons in a steel katori over hot water. Part your hair a few times and work the oil into the scalp, then run what's left down the greys.

Massage for five minutes with your fingertips. Leave it on for an hour, or overnight if your scalp doesn't turn greasy. Wash out with a mild shampoo.

With amla oil for white hair, two or three times a week is plenty. Give it two months before you decide anything about texture. Colour, as we said, won't change.

Patch test the first time. Put a little behind your ear and leave it for 24 hours.

Should you mix amla oil with bhringraj or coconut oil?

You can, and lots of people do mix amla oil for grey hair with other oils. Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) is the herb Ayurveda pairs with amla for hair, and it's called kesharaja, roughly "king of hair." There's animal research on its hair growth effects. Darkening grey hair in people? Not proven.

A simple amla oil for grey hair blend is half amla, half bhringraj, for a dry or itchy scalp. If you want something lighter that soaks in better, go half amla, half virgin coconut. Coconut oil is one of the few oils shown to get into the hair shaft and reduce protein loss, which our guide on coconut oil for hair growth goes into.

Want to cook your own blend at home? We wrote up our bhringraj, amla and onion oil recipe for exactly that.

How do amla, henna and indigo cover grey hair?

This is the part that actually changes colour. Henna (mehendi) stains hair orange red. Indigo stains it blue. Use henna first and indigo after, and the two together go brown to black depending on timing.

Amla powder often goes into the henna paste. People say it cools the orange tone and leaves hair softer. That's mostly experience passed around, not lab data. Still, it's the traditional reason amla got linked with dark hair at all.

Two cautions before you pair henna with amla oil for grey hair. Buy pure henna, not "black henna" mixes, which can contain PPD, a dye that causes nasty allergic reactions in some people. And patch test anything you put on your scalp.

Amla oil for white hair fits in after colouring. Henna can leave hair dry, and an oil massage a day or two later softens it back.

What do the numbers say about amla oil and grey hair?

Start with what's inside amla oil for grey hair. Fresh amla is often quoted at around 600 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit. Very little of that carries into oil, since vitamin C is water soluble. The oil friendly parts that do come through are the polyphenols.

Scalp hair grows roughly 1 cm a month. So a two month trial only shows you 2 cm of new growth near the roots. Judge results there, not at the tips.

How much oil? If your hair reaches your shoulders, a teaspoon or two does it. Sealed, kept away from sunlight, a bottle is fine for roughly twelve months. Opened? Try to finish it by six. And if it starts smelling like a box of crayons, throw it out, it's rancid.

Which RV Organica oils help with grey hair care?

Our amla carrier oil. This is the main one. Our pure amla oil has amla extract infused in, and you won't find mineral oil or parabens on the label. Smells a bit like dry leaves. Not too thick. So far three people have reviewed it, and all three gave five stars (yes, three isn't many).

Our bhringraj carrier oil. Thicker, with that grassy herbal smell. Our bhringraj oil sits at 4.43 across 7 reviews. Got a dry scalp? Go 50:50 with amla.

Our virgin coconut carrier oil. Add our virgin coconut oil when the blend feels too heavy, or when your greys are the rough, dry kind. People have given it 4.67 over 3 reviews. Turns solid below about 24°C, which is normal.

If hair fall bothers you more than greys, our ranked list of the best hair oil for hair growth compares the evidence oil by oil.

Can brands use amla oil in grey hair care products?

Plenty do. Lots of little Ayurvedic brands bottle their own amla oil for grey hair, often with curry leaf or brahmi stirred in. Making one yourself? Watch the label copy. Regular hair oil in India is a cosmetic under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020. Write "reverses greying" on it and you're suddenly talking like a medicine, which is a different licence altogether.

We pack it anywhere from 1 kg to 25 kg. Want it in your own bottle with your label? We do that too. Ask and you'll get the COA for your batch, plus an MSDS if your formulator needs one.

Frequently asked questions about amla oil for grey hair

Can amla oil turn white hair black permanently?

No. That strand's pigment cells have retired, basically. If you want colour, you need something that stains, like mehendi or indigo.

How long does amla oil take to work on grey hair?

Texture changes fast, maybe three or four washes. Colour won't change at all. Trying some routine? Wait two months, then check the hair closest to the scalp.

Which oil is best for premature grey hair?

None has been proven to reverse it. Any of amla, bhringraj or coconut will keep hair soft. Honestly though, if you're greying young, the blood report tells you more than the oil bottle.

Can I use amla oil with henna for grey hair?

Yes. A spoon of amla powder in the mehendi is pretty standard. Oil a day or two after, since henna leaves hair feeling like straw. Try the henna on a small patch of skin before the first full application.

Can premature grey hair be reversed naturally?

A bit, sometimes. Low B12 or a slow thyroid? Sorting that out may cut down on fresh greys. And in that 2021 Columbia study, a few hairs that had only just gone grey got colour back once the person's stress came down. Long standing white hair usually stays white.

Final thoughts

Amla oil for grey hair is good care and a bad promise. White won't turn black. Your greys will feel nicer though, your scalp stops itching, and if you want colour, mehendi and indigo are right there.

Greying early? Blood test first. Oil second. I'm writing this from our certified plant in Panipat, where we infuse amla, run the batch tests and fill the bottles most weeks.
