Amla and Coconut Oil for Hair: Which Is Better, and Should You Mix Them?

Essential Oils Expert, RV Organica

Quick answer: Amla and coconut oil for hair? Real talk, there's hardly a fight here. Coconut oil is the better studied one. It gets inside the hair shaft and cuts protein loss. Amla adds polyphenols and a long Ayurvedic track record. Most amla oils are made in coconut oil anyway. So for most hair types, a 1:1 mix gets you both.

Two bottles. Coconut in the blue one your mother bought in bulk. Amla in the green one your dadi swears by. And every Sunday the same argument about which one goes on your head.

Here's the twist. Half the time it's the same oil. Plenty of amla hair oils are just dried amla soaked in coconut oil, so the "fight" is really coconut oil versus coconut oil with amla in it.

We fill both at our Panipat unit, and "which one should I buy?" shows up in our inbox more than you'd expect. So this guide puts amla and coconut oil for hair side by side, honestly, including where each one falls short.

The question most people ask is which is stronger. I'd ask what's going wrong with your hair first. Ends breaking and frizzing up? Totally different problem from a scalp that's itchy and snowing flakes by midweek.

What's actually different between amla oil and coconut oil?

You've used coconut oil forever. Somebody presses the white flesh. The virgin kind is made from fresh coconut without much heat, and yes, it smells like a nariyal pani stall. That blue bottle on your mum's shelf? Copra oil, from dried coconut, refined afterwards.

Amla oil isn't pressed from amla at all. The fruit has almost no oil in it. What happens is dried amla sits in some other oil, sometimes on low heat, until the oil takes on its colour. In India that other oil is mostly coconut. Sesame and mustard show up too.

So amla and coconut oil for hair aren't really rivals. One is a base. The other is usually that same base with gooseberry added. How it's made, step by step, is in our guide to amla oil benefits and how to pick a pure one, if you're curious.

What does coconut oil do for hair?

This one has real lab work behind it. In 2003 the Journal of Cosmetic Science published a study by Rele and Mohile comparing coconut, sunflower and mineral oil on hair. Only coconut cut protein loss. Healthy hair or damaged hair, oiled before the wash or after it, didn't matter.

Why? Mostly lauric acid. The Codex standard for vegetable oils (CXS 210-1999) puts it at about 45 to 53% of coconut oil. It's a small, straight little molecule. So it gets into the strand. Bigger fats mostly coat the outside.

What it can't do is grow new hair. We dug through that research for our coconut oil for hair growth piece, and honestly it's a mixed bag.

What does amla oil add on top?

With amla you get polyphenols and tannins (gallic and ellagic acid get named most). Put them in a test tube and they act like antioxidants. Whether that changes much on a real scalp is still open. Proper trials on people? Haven't happened yet.

Then there's vitamin C, which every amla ad loves. Fresh fruit? Tons, roughly 600 mg in 100 g if you go by the usual number. Oil can't hold much of it though, it's a water thing. So that "vitamin C rich" sticker is mostly marketing.

What amla definitely adds is tradition. Ayurveda lists amalaki as a rasayana herb, and it's been in Indian hair oils for centuries. That counts for something with a lot of families, and that's fine. I'd just not mix up dadi's wisdom with the lab data, that's all.

Which one should dry, frizzy hair get?

Say your hair's dry and frizzy and the budget allows one of amla and coconut oil for hair. Coconut, if you have to pick one. It's the one with proof for reducing protein loss, and that's what keeps dry, damaged hair from snapping.

Thick, coarse Indian hair tends to love it. Very fine hair? Could go flat and oily looking by evening chai. Less oil helps. So does washing it out earlier.

Got an amla coconut oil at home already (amla soaked in coconut)? Then relax. You're getting the coconut part anyway.

Which one helps an itchy, flaky scalp more?

Dandruff cure? Neither, I'm afraid. Usually there's a yeast behind the flakes, Malassezia, and it lives off the oil on your scalp. Pile more oil on overnight and you might be feeding it dinner.

Coconut oil has a small edge here. That yeast prefers oleic acid, and coconut is mostly lauric, so it's less of a feast. Tiny white flakes from a tight, dry scalp? Try amla and coconut oil for hair about 30 minutes before you shampoo. That usually helps.

Flakes that are large, a bit yellow and oily are another story. That one needs an antifungal shampoo from the chemist, not oil.

Should you just mix amla and coconut oil for hair?

I'd say yes for most. A 50:50 bottle of amla and coconut oil for hair is cheap to make. Coconut's lab backed bit and amla's old school bit, together.

Same amount of each into a glass bottle. Shake it. Done. Is your amla oil coconut based already? Then mixing just thins it out and tones down the smell.

Want the old home version, amla powder and coconut oil for hair? Put two tablespoons of virgin coconut oil in a small pan, flame as low as it goes. Stir in a teaspoon of amla powder. Five minutes, then off. Once it's cooled, pour it through a muslin cloth. Make small batches. Without a preservative, use it up within a few weeks.

Using it mainly because of greys? Then our amla oil for grey hair guide is worth five minutes. It's upfront about what a mix like this won't do.

How do you put amla and coconut oil on your hair?

From November to February, virgin coconut oil in a Delhi or Panipat bathroom will be a white lump. It turns solid under roughly 24°C. Stand the bottle in a mug of hot water. Totally normal.

Make three or four partings. Scalp first, then whatever's left on your palms goes down the lengths. Rub for five minutes or so, fingertips, not nails. Then leave it an hour or two. Sleeping in it works too, as long as your scalp isn't greasy by morning.

Wash with something mild. Most people oil with amla and coconut oil for hair twice, maybe three times a week, and that's plenty. First time? Try a tiny bit behind one ear and wait a full day.

What do the numbers actually tell you?

Remember that 45 to 53% lauric acid figure? It's the reason coconut feels nothing like olive or almond oil. Those two are mostly oleic acid.

Somewhere around 24 or 25°C is where coconut oil melts. Colder, and it's a white solid. Above it, clear and runny. Neither means it's gone bad.

Shoulder length hair? One or two teaspoons. Unopened and out of the sun, both oils are good for roughly twelve months. Opened, aim for six months. Smells sour, or weirdly like crayons? It's rancid. Bin it.

One last number. Hair grows about a centimetre a month, so give any routine two or three months before you call it.
