Quick answer: Virgin coconut oil? It's squeezed out of fresh coconut. Not copra. And it isn't bleached or deodorised later. So the coconut smell stays. I'd use it on dry skin after a bath, or as a massage oil. Oily face? I wouldn't put it there.
Here's a thing I hear a lot. Someone buys a bottle marked virgin coconut oil, it smells faintly of coconut (maybe), and in a North Indian December it just stays runny. Clear. Real coconut oil would've gone white and hard by mid-November.
So the question isn't really "does it work?" It does. The question is whether you're even holding virgin oil.
I'm writing this from our manufacturing unit in Nimbri, Panipat, where we press and test carrier oils every week. Most of what follows comes from batch reports and from bulk buyers who called us after getting burnt somewhere else.
Labels don't tell you much, honestly. "Cold pressed" gets printed on almost everything now. And "extra virgin"? For olive oil that's a legal grade. For coconut oil it's just a nice-sounding word. What actually tells you anything is the chemistry, mostly free fatty acid and how far the oil has oxidised. Smell and shelf life come down to those two. The pretty packaging decides nothing.
What makes virgin coconut oil actually work?
Lauric acid, mostly. It makes up about half the oil, and our own spec sheet puts it close to 50%. This is the 12-carbon fatty acid behind the mild antimicrobial effect people notice on skin. It's also why melted coconut oil feels lighter than you'd expect from something that sets like butter.
Refining is the other half of the story. RBD oil (refined, bleached, deodorised) loses a good chunk of the natural polyphenols in processing. Virgin oil skips those steps, so more of that stays put. There's a 2018 paper on this in Food Science & Nutrition, where researchers tried four ways of making virgin coconut oil and tested what came out. Every sample kept real antioxidant activity. Lauric acid ranged from 48.4% up to 52.8%.
And then copra. People forget about copra. Basically it's coconut meat left to dry for days, a lot of the time over a smoky fire. Press oil out of that and you get a sharp, smoky note, and more free fatty acid too. Virgin oil? Fresh, mature kernel only. That single rule does more for quality than any label claim.
Which coconut oils does RV Organica make for skin, body and soap?
Virgin Coconut Carrier Oil. Our cold-pressed virgin coconut carrier oil is pressed from fresh kernel. No solvents. No heat refining. It's got 3 reviews right now, 4.67 out of 5 on average. People mention softer skin, and scalp care comes up too. Once the room drops below roughly 24°C it turns white and firm, then melts the moment it touches your hand. I use it as a body moisturiser. It also works as the hard oil in a homemade lip balm.
Fractionated Coconut Carrier Oil. Totally different product, despite the name. Fractionated coconut oil has had the long chain fats taken out, so what's left is mainly caprylic and capric acid. It won't solidify, even in a Haryana January. No smell at all. It soaks in quickly. Rated 4.5 out of 5 from 2 reviews, it's the better pick for roll-ons or perfume blends where coconut scent would just be in the way.
Coconut Massage Oil. Don't want to mix anything yourself? The ready coconut massage oil is already blended, with caprylic/capric triglyceride added so it stays liquid and glides longer. It has 2 reviews so far, rated 4.5 out of 5. Nice after a bath.
Coconut Soap Base. If you make soap, look at the coconut melt and pour soap base. Its main ingredient is sodium cocoate, which is just coconut oil that's already been saponified. SLS-free and vegan. Three reviews, 4.67 out of 5, and one buyer wrote that her bars felt natural and didn't leave skin dry. It melts somewhere around 50 to 55°C.
Is virgin coconut oil better than refined coconut oil?
Honestly? Kind of depends on the job.
Refined coconut oil usually starts as copra. It then gets bleached and deodorised until it smells of nothing, which is actually handy sometimes. Making a heavily scented cold process soap? The fragrance hides everything anyway, so refined oil gives you the same lather for less money. It also handles frying heat better.
On skin, though, I'd pick virgin every time. You keep more of the antioxidants. And if you like the smell of coconut, that comes free.
Now, a myth. Lots of people think virgin oil solidifies in winter and refined oil doesn't. Not true. Both melt around 24°C. The only coconut oils that stay liquid in the cold are fractionated or hydrogenated ones. So if your "virgin" bottle is still crystal clear on a cold Ludhiana morning, something else has probably been mixed in.
What do the quality numbers on a virgin coconut oil COA mean?
Whoever you're buying from, ask them for the COA, the Certificate of Analysis. Then check two numbers before you read anything else.
First, acid value. It shows how much free fatty acid has built up, which is the earliest sign an oil is breaking down. FSSAI brought in a separate standard for virgin coconut oil in its October 2017 oils and fats amendment. Under it, acid value can go as high as 4.0. Peroxide value, 15 milliequivalents per kg max. Moisture has to stay at or under 0.5%. Think of it as the legal minimum.
The APCC, that's the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, is a lot tougher. Their member countries grow most of the coconut the world trades, so their word carries weight. Free fatty acid: 0.5% at most, counted as lauric acid. Peroxide value: 3 meq O₂/kg, five times tighter than FSSAI on that one.
Quick bit of maths most blogs skip. With coconut oil, free fatty acid is calculated as lauric, not oleic. So an acid value of 1.0 mg KOH/g comes out to about 0.36% free fatty acid. Our virgin coconut oil is specced at 1.0 or under. That clears the APCC bar, not only the FSSAI one.
Other figures? Refractive index, somewhere around 1.448. Moisture's the one we fuss over at the plant. We keep it at 0.1% or lower, since any water left behind makes the oil go off faster. Flash point's over 220°C. And if you keep the bottle sealed and away from the sun, you've got two years.
On older stock, watch the peroxide value. Fresh oil reads very low. Once it gets much past 10, your nose will catch it before the lab report does. Sour. A bit like old crayons.
How do you use virgin coconut oil for skin and body care?
I put virgin coconut oil on straight out of the shower, skin still a little wet. A pea-sized bit covers a whole forearm. Wet skin thins it out, which is why you don't end up shiny.
For cracked heels, rub some in before bed and pull on cotton socks. Works for rough elbows too. I also use it to get waterproof kajal off before washing my face, just massage and wipe with a warm cloth.
It's a good carrier for essential oils, at roughly 1 to 2% for body use. New to blending? Our guide on how to dilute essential oils safely has drop counts per teaspoon.
One honest warning. On the comedogenic scale coconut oil normally scores a 4 out of 5, which is high, and yes, it does block pores for some people. Dry skin tends to be fine with it. Oily skin, often not. Try it on your jawline for three or four nights first. Also, during July and August, when humidity climbs past 80%, it can feel heavy even on your arms. That's just the weather.
Hair's a whole other topic, and our hair oil guide for growth and frizz gets into when coconut beats the alternatives.
Can you use virgin coconut oil in soap, balms and private label products?
Yes. Formulators love it. In cold process soap it's normally kept at 20 to 30% of total oils, which gives a hard bar and big bubbly lather. Go over 30% and the bar starts feeling harsh, worse in winter. Its saponification value is high too (250 or more under the FSSAI spec), so it takes more lye per gram than olive or sunflower oil would.
Balms and body butters need a little thought. Remember that 24°C melting point? A body butter made mostly from virgin coconut oil goes soft and greasy by May in Panipat. Mix in shea or cocoa butter and it holds up. Lotions are harder still, and our piece on why body lotion separates explains the seasonal oil problem.
Buying for a brand? Virgin coconut oil is available from 500 ml to 25 kg, and every batch ships with a COA. We can talk custom packaging and labels for private label work. Want coconut lather without handling lye at all? That's what the coconut soap base is for.
How do you buy pure virgin coconut oil in India?
Try the fridge test. Leave a small jar in for about an hour. Pure virgin coconut oil sets evenly white. See a cloudy bit sitting on a clear bit? Someone's mixed it.
Now sniff it. Should be fresh coconut, slightly sweet, nothing else. Smoky or sour or kind of burnt? Copra oil, almost certainly.
Ask for the COA too. A genuine supplier shares acid value and peroxide value without any drama. If they dodge, well, there's your answer.

What questions do people ask about virgin coconut oil?
What is the difference between virgin coconut oil and normal coconut oil?
Mostly it's the starting material. Virgin coconut oil comes from fresh kernel and isn't refined, so you still get the smell and the antioxidants. The normal stuff is generally made from copra, then bleached and deodorised. Fat-wise they're almost twins. Virgin's lower in free fatty acid though. Your nose will tell you which is which.
Is virgin coconut oil good for the face?
Kind of up to your skin type. Dry or normal faces usually do well with it at night, and it takes makeup off gently. If you break out easily, though, it can clog things up. Try a small patch first. Or just use fractionated coconut oil, it's much lighter on the face.
How can I check if virgin coconut oil is pure at home?
Fridge it for an hour. Genuine virgin coconut oil turns evenly white, with no separate layers. Smell it next. It should smell like fresh coconut and never smoky or sour. For proof, ask the seller for a COA with the acid value and peroxide value.
Why does virgin coconut oil turn solid in winter?
Because it melts at about 24°C. Coconut oil is mostly saturated medium chain fat, so below that temperature it sets white on its own. That's normal, and actually a good sign. Stand the bottle in lukewarm water for a few minutes and it'll go liquid again.
Can virgin coconut oil be used for baby massage?
Lots of Indian families use it for exactly that, since it's mild and has no added fragrance. Keep it plain, no essential oils mixed in, and try a little on one small patch before doing the whole body. Don't use it where skin's broken or red. And if your baby has eczema or really sensitive skin, have a word with the paediatrician first.
Final Thoughts
Worth buying? If it's the real thing, yes. Few oils cover body care, massage and formulation work this well on their own. The problem is how much of what's sold under the name isn't virgin at all.
So ignore the adjectives on the label. Check it sets in the cold. Smell it. Ask for a COA with a low acid value. We see the gap between a good batch and a tired one every week at our certified plant, and it's bigger than most buyers would guess.
