Quick answer: My one line answer on sweet almond oil in skincare: it's a lid for your bath water, so put it on wet skin. You can also mix a drop with your cream at night, or blend a small face oil with it, and dry or normal skin usually likes it. Oily, spotty faces, go easy.
Winter in North India does something specific to skin. By the second week of December your shins start flaking, the backs of your hands look grey, and the expensive cream you bought in October somehow stops working by lunchtime.
That's usually when people remember that sweet almond oil in skincare was their grandmother's answer, and dig out the bottle of badam tel at the back of the cupboard. Good instinct, honestly, but most of them use it the wrong way, on dry skin, in big amounts, and then decide it's too greasy.
This guide comes from the carrier oil side of the business. Our team at the Panipat plant presses and packs sweet almond oil every week, and what customers mail us about skin is rarely about the oil. It's about timing. Before the cream or after? Morning or night? Two drops or ten? So, that.
People tend to treat oils and moisturizers as either/or, as if you pick one. Your skin couldn't care less about that line. All it wants at the very end of your routine is something that stops water sneaking out overnight, and sweet almond oil in skincare is pretty good at that, provided you don't put it on at the wrong moment.
Why does sweet almond oil work as a moisturizer?
Here's the bit nobody explains. A moisturizer can do one of a few jobs, and an almond oil moisturizer really only nails one. Glycerin and aloe drag water into skin. Other stuff fills in the rough, flaky edges. Then there's the stuff that just sits on top like cling film so water can't escape as fast. Almond's mostly that last type, plus a little smoothing.
That's why it feels so different on damp skin compared with dry skin. Put it on straight after a shower and it traps the water that's already there. Put it on bone dry skin in a heated room and you've sealed in, well, not much.
Why it feels nice and not waxy comes down to its fats. Lots of oleic acid, which spreads like butter on hot toast. A bit of linoleic, which your own skin barrier happens to use too. And some vitamin E, mostly the alpha tocopherol type, which keeps the oil from going stale in the bottle and gives skin a small antioxidant boost.
How do you add almond oil to your skincare routine?

When you add sweet almond oil in skincare, the order matters more than the brand. Water based products first, oil last.
In the morning on the face, most people don't need it at all, especially under sunscreen, because a layer of oil can make sunscreen slide around. Night is when sweet almond oil in skincare earns its place. Wash up, do your serum if you've got one, and then either press two or three drops over your night cream, or ditch the cream and put the oil on while your face is still a little wet.
For the body, the best moment is within a couple of minutes of stepping out of the bath. Don't towel off completely, leave yourself a bit damp, and rub about half a teaspoon into each arm and leg. Feels like nothing. It covers more than you'd expect when skin is wet.
Feet and hands, though? Go wild. Glob it on your heels at bedtime and pull on old cotton socks. By morning the cracks feel a lot less like sandpaper. If your job keeps you standing on hard floors all day, you'll probably notice in a week or so.
Can almond oil replace your moisturizer?
On the body? Often, yes. Rubbing almond oil for dry skin into your legs and arms after a bath is about as low effort as it gets. Lots of families in India have used plain almond or coconut oil instead of lotion for generations, and for normal to dry body skin that's perfectly reasonable.
On the face it depends on your skin type. Dry and rarely breaks out? Then a few drops on damp skin can honestly replace your cream. Combination? Cheeks only. Leave your forehead and nose out of it. Really oily, or acne that keeps coming back? Keep your gel moisturizer. Use the almond oil on elbows and shins instead.
On the comedogenic scale (0 to 5), formulators usually put sweet almond around 2. Lowish chance of clogging. Not zero. Honestly though, that scale is built on old lab tests and your face may disagree with it. Two weeks of watching your own face tells you more.
Which RV Organica oils pair well with almond in skincare?
Ten oil blends look great on Instagram. In real life, one or two oils mixed well beat them almost every time.
Our sweet almond carrier oil. We don't refine our cold pressed sweet almond oil, so it comes out pale gold, light enough for your face and plentiful enough to slather on legs. It's the base for everything below. It has three reviews so far averaging around 4.7, which is encouraging, though still a small sample.
Our vitamin E carrier oil. By itself it's thick and a touch tacky. Drop a few drops of vitamin E oil into your almond, though, and you get a richer night oil that also stays fresh longer.
Our rosehip seed carrier oil. Bumpy texture or little lines bugging you as well as the dryness? Add a splash of rosehip seed oil. The almond and rosehip combo ends up lighter on the face, and normal skin types tend to like it.
Our aloe vera carrier oil. Too much sun? Mix almond with our aloe vera oil and rub it on your arms and the back of your neck. Calms things down a bit.
What are some simple DIY almond oil skincare recipes?
These are rough, kitchen table recipes. Change them to suit your skin. Use a brown or blue bottle, make a little at a time, and finish it in six to eight weeks (nothing in here stops it going off).
Night face oil first. You need 10 ml sweet almond, 2 ml rosehip seed, 5 drops vitamin E. Shake it up in a dropper bottle. At night, wash your face, then pat on two drops while it's still a bit wet.
For the body, a homemade almond oil moisturizer is just 50 ml sweet almond and one teaspoon vitamin E. Bored of plain? Add lavender essential oil, ten drops max for the whole bottle. Then use it right after your shower.
And a quick heel and cuticle oil. Basically the same thing but heavier on vitamin E (about 10 drops per 10 ml). Rub into nails and heels before you sleep.
Adding essential oils to anything you leave on? Face gets about 1%, body about 2%. Easier in drops, honestly. One drop per teaspoon for the face, two for the body. IFRA (that's the International Fragrance Association) has limits for products you leave on your skin, and you're well under them at this strength.
What do the numbers say about sweet almond oil for skin?
For the curious. In 2020 the Journal of Food Science and Technology published a study that pressed oil from 25 different sweet almond genotypes and tested each one. Oleic acid landed anywhere from 62.43% to 76.34%. Linoleic came in at 13.97% to 29.55%, and palmitic stayed small, 4.97% to 7.51%. That mix is basically why the oil feels rich but doesn't leave a thick film.
They checked vitamin E too (47.42 to 80.15 mg per 100 g, if you're keeping notes), and pretty much all of it was the alpha tocopherol kind.
There's also a 2010 paper, "The uses and properties of almond oil," in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. Mostly it's a look back at how people have used the stuff on dry, rough skin for centuries. It's a review though, not a trial. So treat it as history, not proof.
How long does it keep? An unopened bottle of cold pressed sweet almond in a dark cupboard is good for about a year. Your DIY mixes are another matter (no preservatives, remember), so make small amounts.
Who should avoid almond oil on their skin?
Almond oil for dry skin is gentle, sure. But if tree nuts are a problem for you, don't use it anywhere, face or body. No nut problems that you know of? Still dab a bit on your inner arm and give it a full 24 hours.
Breakout prone, especially those small bumps on the jawline or forehead? Then go slow on the face. Use it on one patch for a couple of weeks and see what happens before you spread it everywhere.
Last thing, read the label. It has to say sweet almond oil. Bitter almond is a totally different product, used in tiny drops for flavour and perfume after special treatment, and it doesn't belong in your skincare. Our complete almond oil guide explains the difference between the two in more detail.
Can skincare brands use sweet almond oil in their formulas?
All the time. Check the back of a few lotions, lip balms or baby creams next time you're at a chemist. It's there a lot. Handmade soaps too. Formulators like it since it's mild, barely smells, and mixes fine with butters and waxes.
In a typical cream or lotion you'll see it somewhere between 2 and 10% of the oil phase. Body oils and cleansing oils can be mostly almond. Soapers tend to cap it at 5 to 15% of total oils, since push it higher and the bar goes soft.
Brands can get it from us in 5, 10, 20 or 25 kg packs, and we do private label filling too. We'll send a COA with any batch if you ask, and formulators can have the MSDS. Making massage products as well? Then have a look at the sweet almond massage oil piece we put out, it covers spa dilution in more detail.

Frequently asked questions about sweet almond oil in skincare
Is sweet almond oil a good moisturizer for dry skin?
It is, as long as your skin's a little wet when it goes on. It holds water in and softens the rough bits, which is mostly what dry skin is begging for. Even better over aloe gel or a light lotion.
Should I apply almond oil before or after moisturizer?
After. Whatever is runny and water based, serum or lotion, goes on first, and the almond oil comes last over the top. Reverse it and the lighter stuff just sits there.
Can I use almond oil on my face every day?
Dry or normal face, not many pimples? Nightly is usually fine. Lots of pimples? Two or three nights a week. Or just on the tight, dry bits.
Can almond oil help with dark circles?
A little. Dry, crinkly under eye skin gets softer and can look a shade less tired, though the brown kind you were born with stays put. We wrote a whole piece on almond oil for dark circles that goes into which circles respond and the safe way to apply it.
Is sweet almond oil safe for sensitive skin?
For most sensitive skin it's fine, since the oil is mild and almost unscented. I'd still try the plain oil on your inner arm before anything else, leave essential oils out for the first few weeks, and avoid it completely if nuts give you trouble.
Final thoughts
So, sweet almond oil in skincare. Not magic. Just a really reliable final step. Wet skin. Tiny amount on the face. Lots on heels, knuckles and shins once it gets cold.
Get cold pressed sweet almond. Mix two oils, not ten. Give your face a fortnight before you decide anything. (All of this comes from our certified manufacturing plant in Panipat, where we press, test and pack this oil every week for homes and skincare brands.)
