Quick answer: Almond oil? Basically what comes out when you squeeze almond kernels hard enough. For your skin, hair or kitchen you want the sweet kind, and ideally cold pressed. It softens dry skin and cuts down hair breakage, and it's a nice mild base for essential oils too. Got a nut allergy? Then leave it alone.
My nani had a tiny green bottle of badam rogan that lived behind her saris in the almirah. Nobody else was allowed to touch it. A few drops went into my milk during board exams, a few went on my head every Sunday, and if a cousin's wedding was coming up, a little got patted under her eyes.
Then you go online to buy almond oil and find a hundred labels. Sweet, bitter, edible, cosmetic, cold pressed, refined, "100% pure." Most of them look the same. Some of them are not even the same oil.
I work at a carrier oil plant in Panipat, so I see these batches, their COA sheets and the confused buyer emails pretty much every week. That's where this guide comes from. Not from reading other blogs.
Here's the thing people get wrong. They pick by brand or by how fancy the bottle looks. Honestly the label matters way more, and only a couple of words on it. Does it say sweet? Does it say cold pressed? And is it meant for eating or only for skin? Get that wrong and, worst case, the wrong bottle ends up on your baby's legs during a massage.
What is almond oil and how is it made?
Botanists call the tree Prunus dulcis, if you care about that sort of thing. Crack a kernel and about half of what's inside is fat, which is why pressing oil out of almonds is so easy.
For cold pressed almond oil, the kernels just get crushed in a press. No heat added, no chemical solvents. What drips out is pale yellow and kind of smells like almonds, obviously. Refined stuff? Whole other process. Heat, bleach, deodorise, then onto a shop shelf where it can sit for ages, minus a good chunk of the vitamin E it started with. The smell goes too.
Hindi labels call it badam rogan or badam ka tel. Sometimes rogan badam shirin. That last word just means sweet. See that name on a bottle and it's plain sweet almond oil, just with a Persian tag on it. Unani hakims have been handing it out for ages.
What is the difference between sweet and bitter almond oil?
Almost no brand page talks about this. Which is strange, because it's the one bit that can actually hurt someone.
Sweet almonds are the ones in your dry fruit box. Their oil is safe on skin and hair, and in food grade you can eat it. Bitter almonds are another variety. Their kernels hold something called amygdalin, around 2 to 4% of the dried weight. When it breaks down you get benzaldehyde (that's the marzipan smell) plus hydrocyanic acid. Prussic acid, if you've read old detective novels. Poison.
Flavour and perfume houses do use bitter almond oil, but only after a process strips out that acid. They tag it FFPA, Free From Prussic Acid. Even then it's a few drops in a big batch, never a massage oil.
So my rule is boring but it works. No "sweet" on the label and a seller who shrugs when you ask? Don't put it on your skin. And for your kid, double no.
What are the benefits of almond oil for hair?
Think lengths, not roots. Oleic acid kind of wraps each strand, so the cuticle stops sticking up and the ends don't rub themselves into splits as quickly. Ever noticed the comb glides after a Sunday badam tel champi? That's why.
Does it grow new hair? Honestly, there is no strong clinical proof of that. What it does well is reduce breakage, and less breakage means your length stays on your head instead of on the comb. If thinning is the bigger worry, I'd point you to our list of the best hair oil for hair growth, where the scalp evidence is stronger for some oils.
Delhi winters wreck hair. For that dry, staticky mess, almond oil is among the lighter oils you can use. Castor feels like glue next to it. A lot of people mix the two, mostly almond with a splash of castor for body. Frizz your main headache? We put a bunch of oils head to head in our guide to hair oils for dry and frizzy hair.
Me, I take about two teaspoons and rub my palms together till the oil isn't cold anymore. Start at the ends, not the scalp. Whatever's left, massage into the roots for five minutes or so. Leave it an hour or two. Overnight is fine too unless your scalp gets greasy. Then shampoo it out, nothing harsh.
What does almond oil do for skin and face?
For skin, it's what dermatologists would call an emollient. Fancy word, simple job. It plugs the little gaps between flaky cells so moisture doesn't leak out as quick, and in my experience cracked heels or those ashy winter elbows start looking less sad in maybe three, four days.
On the face, it suits dry and normal skin best. A few drops pressed onto damp skin after washing at night works better than rubbing oil on dry skin. It also makes a decent makeup remover, especially for kajal and waterproof mascara.
Now, the stuff I won't promise. It won't make you fairer. It won't pull off a tan by Friday or wipe out old acne marks, whatever the reels say. Under eye circles? Eh, maybe a bit brighter, because hydrated skin bounces light around. Mostly though, those circles come from your parents or from scrolling at 2 am.
If your face gets oily or spotty, dab a little on your jawline first and wait a day. Then maybe twice a week, not every night. Or just pick something lighter. Some people break out from it. Not the oil's fault, it just isn't for every face.
How do the technical numbers for almond oil look?
Okay, what's actually inside. There's a 2020 paper in the Journal of Food Science and Technology that tested oil from 25 sweet almond genotypes. Oleic acid came out anywhere from 62.43% up to 76.34%. Linoleic was lower, 13.97% to 29.55%. Palmitic stayed small at 4.97% to 7.51%.
The vitamin E bit, total tocopherols if we're being proper, was 47.42 to 80.15 mg in every 100 g. And almost all of it turned up as alpha tocopherol. Lucky, since that's the type your skin actually puts to work. High oleic plus decent vitamin E is basically why it feels rich but not sticky.
Two numbers matter when you check a supplier's COA. Acid value shows how far the oil has started breaking down, and a fresh cold pressed lot should be low. Peroxide value is about oxidation. You know that old namkeen smell oil gets after a while? That. Ask for both. A real manufacturer won't mind.
Sealed and kept away from heat, cold pressed almond oil should be good for around twelve months. Opened? Aim to use it up inside six or so. And please, not on the kitchen window ledge where the afternoon sun bakes it.
Which almond oil should you buy from RV Organica?
We press just one, from sweet almonds. It comes in two grades so nobody has to guess.
Sweet Almond Carrier Oil, cosmetic grade. Our cold pressed sweet almond oil is what you'd grab for a champi or a night face oil, or when you're messing about with DIY skincare. Unrefined, pale gold, sinks in fast. Three people have reviewed it so far and the average is 4.7. Tiny sample, I know. You can get a 100 ml bottle for the bathroom shelf or go all the way up to 25 kg if you're a brand.
Sweet Almond Carrier Oil, edible grade. Same almonds again, only this lot is packed the way food has to be. This is the one if you want old school badam rogan in milk or cooking. Ask us for the edible grade COA first.
Mixed with vitamin E. In winter I add a few drops of vitamin E oil for hair and skin to my own bottle. Helps a little with antioxidants, and my homemade mix doesn't turn funky as fast.
Mixed with jojoba. Scalp turns oily by evening? Go half and half with jojoba oil for scalp care. Jojoba is weirdly close to the oil your own skin makes, which is why the mix doesn't sit heavy.
Is edible grade almond oil different from cosmetic grade?
Yes, and pharmacy brands often blur this. Edible grade oil has to be made and packed in a food licensed facility under FSSAI rules, with limits on contaminants that apply to anything you swallow. Cosmetic grade oil is made for external use. It can be just as pure, but it is not tested and labelled for eating.
So do not put a cosmetic bottle into your dal or your milk. The other way round is fine. Food grade oil can go straight on your hair and skin, no problem.
How is almond oil used as a carrier oil?
Neat essential oils are harsh. Put lavender straight on your wrist and you might regret it. Almond oil is one of the go-to bases for thinning them out since it barely smells of anything and spreads without a fight.
For an adult body massage I'd start at 2 to 3 drops of essential oil per 5 ml of carrier, that's one teaspoon. Face needs less, about one drop per teaspoon. This sits on the cautious side of how the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) approaches leave on skin products. When unsure, go lower.
Want to try it? Lavender in sweet almond before bed is the old favourite. For scalp, people like rosemary with almond and a bit of castor, and the exact ratios are in our homemade hair growth serum guide. Doing spa blends? Our piece on massage oil types and how to choose shows where it sits next to sesame and coconut.
Can businesses buy almond oil in bulk for private label?
Plenty of small soap makers, salons and skincare startups here order it by the drum. It ends up in lip balm, baby oil, cold process soap, creams. Massage oil, obviously.
Soapers usually keep it at 5 to 15% of their total oils, because go higher and the bar turns soft. Cream makers tend to drop it into the oil phase somewhere around 2 to 10%. For massage, nobody stops you from going 100% almond oil.
We supply it in 5, 10, 20 and 25 kg packs, along with private label filling for brands that want their own bottle and label. Want a COA with your batch? Sure. Formulators usually ask for the MSDS too, we have that.

Frequently asked questions about almond oil
Can I use almond oil every day?
On your body and hair, sure, daily is fine for most people. Face is where it depends. If yours is dry, nightly's okay. Oily or spotty? I'd do two, maybe three nights.
Can I use almond oil on my face?
You can. Just make sure the bottle really says sweet almond oil, and try a bit near your jaw before going all in. At night, two or three drops on damp skin does the job. New bumps within a week? Stop.
Is almond oil better than coconut oil?
Depends who's asking. Almond is lighter, so it's nicer on the face and on dry hair. Coconut actually gets inside the hair shaft more, which helps thick or damaged hair. Acne prone? Then coconut stays off your face, honestly. Almond's the safer bet.
Can I apply almond oil on hair overnight?
Yep. Dry or normal scalp, no issue. Don't overdo it. Old towel on the pillow, wash it out next morning, otherwise dust sticks and the scalp gets gunky.
Is almond oil hot or cold for body?
Ayurveda and Unani both treat badam rogan as warming, which is why grandmothers bring it out in winter. Science-wise it doesn't change your body temperature at all. If it suits you, use it in May too.
Where can you read more about specific almond oil uses?
This guide covers the basics, but each use has its own quirks. If your under eyes look tired, start with almond oil for dark circles. For a full body rub at home or in a spa, our sweet almond massage oil guide has the technique and blend ratios. Dry skin in winter? Read sweet almond oil in skincare for the right routine order.
Chapped lips get their own piece on almond oil for lips, and if flakes on your scalp are the problem, check almond oil for dandruff first, because oil doesn't suit every type. Parents planning a malish should read almond oil for baby massage for the safety steps. And for a quick list of everyday uses, from milk to cracked heels, see our guide on the use of badam rogan oil.
Final thoughts
There's a reason this oil has stuck around in Indian homes for generations. Just buy the right one. Sweet, cold pressed, and the grade that matches what you're doing with it. Edible for the kitchen. Either grade for skin and hair.
Just don't expect miracles. Will it soften your skin and calm the frizz? Yes. Good base for essential oils? Also yes. A new hairline or lighter skin, no. I say that as someone who works inside a certified manufacturing plant and watches this oil get pressed and packed most weeks.
