Almond Oil for Baby Massage: Is It Safe for Newborns and How to Use It

Quick answer: Almond oil for baby massage is a common pick in Indian homes, and on most healthy babies it causes no fuss. It still isn't right for every newborn though. Go for plain sweet almond oil (edible grade if you can get it), try a little on one leg first, leave it out if nut allergy or eczema runs in the family, and ask your paediatrician before using it on a baby who's under a month old or was born early.

The daily baby malish is close to sacred in most Indian families. Ask around and you'll hear about a dadi or a hired maalishwali, sitting cross legged on a durrie with the baby lying along her shins and a katori of warm oil next to her knee. Mustard in some homes. Coconut in the south. And in a lot of North Indian homes, badam ka tel.

Parents today get two kinds of advice. One side says oil massage is tradition and of course it's fine. The other side has read something online about oils and eczema and is now nervous about everything. Both have a point.

At our Panipat unit we press and bottle sweet almond oil, and a big share of retail orders come from new parents planning a malish. So this piece sets out what is actually known, what's still a guess, and how to do it carefully.

Is almond oil safe for newborn baby massage?

Used gently and in its plain form, almond oil for baby massage probably won't bother most healthy babies. "Most" is the important word, though, so here's what to check first.

A newborn's skin is still finishing itself. For the first few weeks, the outer layer is thin and is still laying down the fats that keep moisture in and germs out. Whatever goes on it every single day can nudge how that layer develops.

Almond also counts as a tree nut. If a parent or sibling has a nut allergy, bad eczema or asthma, ask your paediatrician before it goes anywhere near the baby.

Age matters too. A lot of doctors say hold off on a full body oil massage until the cord stump has dropped off and the belly button has healed. Babies born early need even more care.

What does the research say about oils on baby skin?

Almond oil itself has barely been studied on babies, so we'll be upfront about what has.

At the University of Manchester, a team led by Alison Cooke ran a pilot trial (published in Acta Dermato-Venereologica) on 115 newborns over four weeks. Some babies got olive oil, some sunflower oil, some nothing. The oiled babies had better hydrated skin, yet the layer that binds skin cells together matured more slowly than in the no oil group. The authors suggested skipping those two oils on healthy newborns until more is known. Almond wasn't tested.

There's also an older and far larger UK study, printed in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2003, that tracked children who went on to develop peanut allergy. Many of them had been given creams with peanut oil in them as babies, usually on rashy skin. Almond wasn't involved. But it explains why a lot of doctors get careful about any nut oil on cracked or eczema prone baby skin.

So where does that leave parents? The malish itself, the touch and the daily routine, is good for babies. Which oil to use on a newborn, or whether to use any oil at all in the first weeks, hasn't been settled by research yet.

Why do Indian families use almond oil for baby massage?

Partly tradition, partly feel. Almond oil for newborn malish has been a North Indian habit for generations. Mothers like that it spreads easily and doesn't smell of much, so the baby keeps that baby smell. Mustard oil leaves yellow marks on clothes and coconut oil sets hard by December, and almond does neither.

There's some chemistry behind the feel. In a 2020 study in the Journal of Food Science and Technology, oil from 25 sweet almond genotypes was 62.43% to 76.34% oleic acid, with vitamin E at 47.42 to 80.15 mg per 100 g. That's why it glides so easily under small hands on a small body.

Plenty of parents also say a short massage helps the baby settle before a bath or a nap. That comes mostly from touch and routine, and you'd likely see it whatever oil you used.

How do you choose a safe almond oil for your baby?

Take your time with the label, because this is where most mistakes with almond oil for baby massage happen.

The word "sweet" has to be there. Bitter almond oil is a separate product with a toxic compound in it unless it's been specially treated, and it should never touch a baby. Our complete almond oil guide goes through the difference.

Look for cold pressed, unrefined oil with one ingredient on the label and nothing else. A lot of shop "baby massage oils" are actually mineral oil with perfume and a string of extracts mixed in. For babies, the shorter the label, the better.

Go for edible grade if you can. Babies put their hands and feet in their mouths constantly, so some oil will be swallowed. Edible grade oil is made in a food licensed facility under FSSAI rules, with contaminant limits set for things people eat.

Don't add any essential oil to a baby's massage oil. Lavender, eucalyptus and camphor are far too strong for infant skin, and camphor and eucalyptus in particular can affect breathing in small children.

How do you give a baby massage with almond oil?

For almond oil for baby massage at home, a warm room helps, and so does timing it for when the baby is awake and in a good mood (not right after a feed). An old cotton sheet or soft towel on the bed or floor is all you need underneath.

The first time, test a tiny drop on the inner thigh. Wait a full day and look for any redness, little bumps or dry patches. If you see anything odd, don't use it.

Half a teaspoon, rubbed between your palms till warm, is plenty for one session. Begin with the legs, slow strokes from thigh to foot. Arms next. Then gentle clockwise circles on the tummy, and finish with the back.

Skip the face, the head's soft spot and anywhere near the eyes. Keep oil away from the umbilical area until the stump has fallen off and healed. And keep the pressure light, this isn't an adult massage.

Ten or fifteen minutes is enough. After that, wipe the leftover oil off with a soft cloth dipped in warm water, or give a quick bath with a mild baby wash, so nothing sits in the creases of the neck, arms and thighs.

When should you avoid almond oil for your baby?

Skip almond oil for baby massage altogether if the skin shows eczema, deep dry cracks or an open rash. Oil sitting on damaged skin can make it angrier.

If either parent or a sibling has a tree nut or peanut allergy, don't use it unless your doctor has said it's okay.

Premature babies and newborns under a month need extra caution. Their skin is more delicate, and your paediatrician might suggest a particular oil, or none.

After any massage, watch for redness, swelling, hives or a baby who suddenly seems more fussy than usual. If you notice any of that, rinse the area with plain water and call your doctor.

Frequently asked questions about almond oil for baby massage

Is almond oil good for newborn babies?

For a healthy baby with no family history of nut allergy or eczema, it can be. Use plain sweet almond oil, test a drop first, and check with your paediatrician if the baby is still in the first month.

Which is better for baby massage, almond oil or coconut oil?

Families use both. Almond stays runny and feels lighter on the skin, while virgin coconut goes solid when the weather turns cold. If nut allergy is a worry in your family, coconut is usually the safer pick, and our virgin coconut oil guide explains more.

Can I use almond oil on my baby's face and head?

Keep it off the face and well away from the eyes. Once the baby is a few months old, a tiny bit on the scalp is generally okay, as long as you avoid the soft spot and don't leave it on overnight.

How often should I massage my baby with almond oil?

Most Indian families do it daily, though a few times a week is fine too. If the skin starts to look red or you see little bumps, cut back.

Should I wash off almond oil after baby massage?

Yes. Wipe off whatever's left, or give a quick bath. Oil that sits in the neck and thigh creases for hours traps sweat, and that's how a lot of heat rashes start.

Once your baby is older, the rest of the family can put the same oil to work. Our guide on the use of badam rogan oil covers everyday uses, and almond oil for dark circles is a good read for tired new parents.

Final thoughts

Almond oil for baby massage works well for a lot of families, provided you pick the bottle carefully. Plain sweet almond oil, edible grade if possible, a patch test on day one, and a quick check with your paediatrician if the baby is very new, was premature, or has allergies or eczema running in the family.

And remember that the oil is the smaller part of it. Ten minutes of warm hands in a quiet room is what your baby actually notices. We put this together from our certified manufacturing unit, where sweet almond oil is pressed, tested and packed every week, and from the questions parents send us.
