Citronella Oil for Skin and Hair: Where It Helps and Where It Doesn't

Quick answer: Citronella oil for skin and hair has a modest, honest role. Lab studies show antifungal and antibacterial activity, and people use it diluted for oily skin, body odour, sweaty feet and a greasy scalp. It is not a proven hair growth oil. Keep it at about 1 percent on the face, 2 to 3 percent on the body, and 1 to 2 percent on the scalp, always in a carrier oil, after a patch test.

A hand dropping citronella oil from a dropper into a palm over a ceramic bowl, with an RV Organica citronella essential oil bottle, half a coconut, a glass bottle of carrier oil, citronella leaves and a wooden comb on a marble counter.

Somebody on Instagram says citronella oil cleared their acne and thickened their hair in a month. Someone else says it gave them a rash in ten minutes. Both might be telling the truth. They probably just used it very differently.

I work at our facility in Nimbri, Panipat, where we fill and test essential oils every day, and customers ask us about citronella oil for skin and hair more than you'd expect. Most of them have tried it neat. Most of the rashes come from that.

The common mistake is to judge citronella by what it does to mosquitoes and assume it must be strong medicine for skin too. What actually matters for your face and scalp is dilution, the freshness of the bottle, and choosing the right job for the oil. It's good at a few small things. It's not a miracle.

What makes citronella oil work on skin and scalp?

Three compounds do the heavy lifting. Citronellal, geraniol and citronellol. In lab studies, citronella oil has shown activity against several fungi, including dermatophytes, the group behind ringworm and athlete's foot, and against bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. Geraniol is thought to disrupt fungal cell membranes.

That's why people use citronella oil for skin and hair problems linked to microbes and oil. Sweaty feet. Body odour in humid months. A greasy, slightly itchy scalp. Odour is mostly bacteria working on sweat, so a mild antibacterial oil makes sense there.

The second factor is smell. Citronella is a decent natural deodoriser. A drop in an unscented body lotion or foot cream makes a real difference in July.

The third factor is your skin barrier. Essential oils are strong. On a healthy, intact barrier at low dilution, citronella is usually well tolerated. On broken, freshly shaved or eczema prone skin, it's far more likely to sting.

Which RV Organica oils pair best with citronella for skin and hair?

Citronella Essential Oil

Our citronella essential oil has 4.67 stars from 6 reviews. Use only a few drops at a time. A small bottle lasts months for skin use, because you'll rarely need more than 6 to 12 drops in a 30 ml blend.

Jojoba Oil, for scalp and oily skin

Our cold pressed jojoba oil for scalp care is rated 4.57 from 21 reviews. Jojoba is a liquid wax that behaves a lot like your own sebum, so it doesn't make an oily scalp feel heavier. It's the base I'd pick for a citronella scalp oil.

Sweet Almond Oil, for dry skin and feet

Sweet almond oil sits at 4.33 from 3 reviews. It's softer and richer, so it suits a foot oil or a body blend for dry skin. It also absorbs slowly, which gives the citronella time to do its job.

Does citronella oil actually help hair growth?

There's no good human evidence that it does. I've looked. Product pages claim it boosts circulation to the roots, but there are no trials on citronella oil for hair growth comparable to the work on rosemary or minoxidil.

Where it can help is the scalp. A greasy, flaky, slightly smelly scalp in monsoon is often linked to yeast and bacteria. A diluted citronella scalp oil, or a few drops in a single wash of shampoo, can make the scalp feel cleaner and smell fresher. A healthier scalp is a better place for hair to grow. That's an indirect benefit, and an honest one.

If your scalp is the real issue, tea tree has stronger evidence for dandruff. Our guide to tea tree oil for hair explains the one proper trial behind it. Citronella blends well with tea tree for an oily scalp, two drops of each in 30 ml of jojoba.

How strong should citronella oil be on skin, in numbers?

Here are the dilutions we use. Face: about 1 percent, which is 6 drops in 30 ml of carrier. Body: 2 to 3 percent, or 12 to 18 drops in 30 ml. Scalp oil: 1 to 2 percent. Feet can take up to 3 percent. A short outdoor mosquito roll on can go to 5 percent, but that's for an evening, not daily skincare. Roughly 20 drops make 1 ml, depending on your dropper.

Citronella oil isn't phototoxic, because it comes from grass leaves, not citrus peel. So sunlight after use isn't the main risk. Allergy is. Under EU Regulation 1223/2009, citronellol, geraniol and limonene are listed fragrance allergens that must be declared on leave on products above 0.001 percent. That tells you something about how often they cause reactions.

Shelf life matters too. Once opened, use the bottle within about a year and keep the cap tight. Oxidised terpenes irritate skin far more than fresh ones. Want the drop counts for any bottle size? Our essential oil dilution calculator does it in seconds.

How do you use citronella oil for skin at home?

Foot oil first, because it's the most useful. Mix 18 drops of citronella oil in 30 ml of sweet almond oil. Massage into clean, dry feet at night, especially between the toes in monsoon. Socks on.

Body odour helper next. Add 1 drop of citronella to a palmful of unscented body lotion after your shower. Underarms are sensitive, so skip freshly shaved skin and stop at any sting.

Face last, and only if your skin is oily and not sensitive. Add 1 drop to a teaspoon of jojoba and dab it on oily areas at night. Never near the eyes. Honestly, many people do better with a lemongrass hydrosol mist than with any essential oil on the face.

Not sure which carrier to choose? Our guide to carrier oils for essential oils matches each base to a skin type.

How do brands use citronella in skin and hair products?

We see it in herbal soaps, foot creams, deodorant sticks, anti lice shampoos, after bite gels and outdoor body lotions. Brands like it because it adds a "natural, fresh, protective" story to a product, and it pairs well with neem, tea tree and lemongrass.

Two things to plan for. In India, cosmetic labels have to follow the Cosmetics Rules, 2020, and claims like "kills fungus" can push a product toward drug territory. And for export to Europe, the allergen declaration rule above applies. Always ask for a batch COA. Our manufacturer and bulk supply page covers sampling and repeat orders.

What do people usually ask about citronella on skin?

Is citronella oil safe to put on skin?

Diluted, yes, for most adults. Undiluted, it can cause redness, itching or contact dermatitis. Use a carrier oil, start low, and patch test on your forearm for 24 hours first.

How to use citronella oil for skin?

Mix it into a carrier oil or unscented lotion at about 1 percent for the face and 2 to 3 percent for the body. Use it for oily skin, body odour, sweaty feet or as a short term mosquito roll on.

Is citronella safe for humans?

On skin, diluted, it's considered possibly safe for most people. Swallowing it isn't safe, and children are especially at risk. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should check with a doctor first.

What is the side effect of citronella?

The main one is skin irritation or allergy, more likely with neat oil, old oil or broken skin. Strong diffusing can cause headaches in some people. Stop using it if you notice a rash.

Can citronella oil repel mosquitoes?

Yes, when applied diluted to skin, for about one to two hours. Our citronella oil mosquito repellent guide has tested roll on and spray ratios.

Final Thoughts

Citronella oil for skin and hair is a helper, not a headline act. It's good for oily skin, sweaty feet, body odour and a greasy scalp, at low dilution and from a fresh bottle. It won't grow hair, and it won't replace a dermatologist. These observations come from working inside a certified manufacturing facility, and the customers who stay happy with this oil are the ones who use six drops, not sixty.
