Quick answer: Clove oil for gums can calm a sore gum for an hour or so, and the eugenol in it is the reason. I'd go with a single drop stirred into a teaspoon of coconut oil, nothing stronger. Gum disease? It won't cure that. An abscess or infected tooth? Not that either. Fever, pus, swelling that spreads, that's a dentist's call.

Gum pain creeps up on you. It isn't the sharp zing of a cavity. Dull. Puffy. Suddenly you're chewing everything on the other side.

Out comes the laung, or the clove oil bottle, almost on reflex. And honestly, clove oil for gums does help, often. But gums are softer and more sensitive than teeth, so the way you use clove oil there matters a lot more.

I work at an essential oil manufacturing facility in Nimbri, Panipat, where we distil clove bud oil. We hear a lot of gum questions, and plenty of them come from people who burnt their gum by using the oil neat. Let's not repeat that.

Why do gums hurt and swell in the first place?

A few usual suspects.

Plaque, mostly. It sits along the gum line and bugs the gum until it goes red and swollen, and bleeds into the sink when you brush. That's gingivitis. A wisdom tooth pushing through can do it too. So can a sharp food bit stuck between teeth, a new brace wire, or brushing too hard.

And then the nasty one. An infected tooth, or an abscess, a pocket of pus near the root. You'll often see it as a sore lump on the gum.

Clove oil can help with some of these. Not all.

How does clove oil help sore gums?

Eugenol. Most of what's in the bottle is eugenol, by the way, somewhere between 70 and 90% if you go by the NIH's LiverTox pages.

What it does is hush the nerves sitting near the surface. Angry tissue settles a little. Back in 2006, the Journal of Dentistry ran a trial ("The effect of clove and benzocaine versus placebo as topical anesthetics") where clove gel held its own against 20% benzocaine, the stuff inside most chemist numbing gels.

Germs in the mouth don't love it either. A 2021 review of herbal toothache remedies by Kumar and colleagues pointed this out, but it also warned that clove oil can be harsh on human cells. So yes, that's why I keep banging on about diluting.

How do you use clove oil on swollen gums?

Salt water first. Roughly half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water does it. Swish it round for half a minute and spit, and you'll often find the gum already feels a touch calmer.

After that, take a teaspoon of carrier oil and drip in just one drop of clove bud oil. Roughly 1%. That's weaker than the 1 to 2% in our guide on how to use clove oil for toothache, and on purpose, gums scorch faster than teeth do. I'd use fractionated coconut as the base.

Cotton bud in. Dab softly along the sore bit. No scrubbing! Five minutes, then spit. Two or three times a day is fine, for a day or two.

Neat oil on gums? Please don't. I've had people send us photos of the white burnt patch it left, and trust me, it looked worse than the swelling.

Can clove oil treat gum disease?

Sadly not, at least not by itself.

Gingivitis is a tartar problem. Clove can soothe and cut some germs down for a bit. That hard tartar crust, though? It stays put. Only a professional cleaning, a scaling, does that.

Think of clove oil for gums as the painkiller, not the fix. Brush morning and night. Floss. Get a cleaning booked. Gums pulling back from the teeth? Clove can't undo that.

Curious about cavities, bad breath, whitening? That's all in our clove oil for teeth guide.

Does clove oil work for a tooth infection or abscess?

It'll take the edge off. A bit. It cannot treat the infection.

Picture a little bag of pus at the bottom of a root. A dentist has to drain it. Maybe a root canal, maybe the tooth comes out, maybe antibiotics too. Dabbing clove on it and hoping? That's a gamble I wouldn't take. These things spread, into the jaw, the neck, even the blood.

Red flags? A pimple on the gum. Pain that won't let you sleep. Foul taste. Fever. A puffy face. See your dentist soon. Swelling heading for your eye or throat, or swallowing gets hard? Go today.

Can you use clove oil for wisdom tooth gum pain?

Yes, as short term relief. As it breaks through, that little hood of gum on top tends to get sore and swollen.

Same 1% mix, dabbed on that hood. After every meal, rinse with warm salt water, food loves hiding under there.

Flap ballooning up? Pus? Can't open your mouth wide? Could be pericoronitis, which is an infection around that tooth. That needs a dentist.

What about clove oil for dry socket?

Here's an interesting one. After a tooth comes out, a clot forms in the hole. Sometimes it falls out early and bare bone shows. Ouch. It usually kicks in two to four days later.

What does the dentist do? Cleans the hole and packs in a medicated dressing. Guess what's in a lot of those dressings. Eugenol. So clove's compound is genuinely part of dry socket care.

But please don't pour clove oil into an empty tooth socket at home. It has to be cleaned out first, by someone who knows what they're doing. Pain getting worse a few days after an extraction? Ring your dentist.

Is clove oil safe for mouth ulcers?

Go slow on this one. An ulcer is basically an open wound, and clove on raw skin stings like mad.

Still want to try? Make it extra weak, one drop in two teaspoons of carrier. One touch with a cotton bud. Sharp sting means rinse right away. Honestly, honey or a chemist's ulcer gel is kinder. Ulcer still there after two weeks? At that point a doctor should take a look.

Which clove oil should you use on gums?

Bud oil. Every time. It's gentler in smell and taste than leaf oil, and it's the traditional choice for the mouth. If you're curious why, we went through the lab numbers in clove bud oil vs clove leaf oil.

The one we make, our clove bud essential oil, is just buds, steam distilled, no fillers. To mix it into, I keep reaching for fractionated coconut oil because it stays runny and tastes of almost nothing. Into oil pulling? Then virgin coconut carrier oil is the old favourite. There's more to pick from in the carrier oils collection if neither suits you.

Bottle's run out? A whole clove held near the sore spot works too, more gently. There's a step by step for that in laung for toothache. Torn between clove, peppermint and tea tree? I ranked them, honestly, in our piece on the best oil for toothache.

Who should avoid clove oil on gums?

Young children, first. No clove oil on a kid's gums unless the doctor okays it. Bottle goes on the top shelf, too. A toddler who swallows eugenol can end up in hospital, so I don't take chances there.

If there's a baby on the way, or one you're feeding, have a word with your doctor first. Blood thinners, a bleeding condition, an extraction booked next week? Ask your dentist, since eugenol might slow clotting down. Bleeding gums plus blood thinners is worth a proper check anyway. One more. Ever come up in a rash after cloves? Then this isn't for you.

FAQs on clove oil for gums

Can I put clove oil directly on my gums?

Not undiluted. I wouldn't, it can burn straight from the bottle. Stir a drop into a teaspoon of carrier first and dab that.

How long does clove oil take to work on gum pain?

Five, ten minutes, usually. Most people say it holds for about an hour, though a lot hangs on what's wrong underneath.

Does clove oil reduce gum swelling?

A little puffiness might settle a bit. Swelling from an infection won't budge, though. If it keeps growing, or you've got fever or pus, that's a dentist visit.

Can clove oil kill a tooth infection?

No. Dulls the pain at best. The pus has to come out, and that's a dentist's job, not something to fiddle with at home.

How often can I use clove oil on my gums?

Two or three times a day is okay, for a couple of days at most. Weeks of daily use will annoy your gums. Take breaks, and sort out what's causing it.

Final thoughts

Clove oil for gums is a good short term friend. Numbs. Calms. Gives you a few quiet hours. Keep the mix weak. And swelling with fever or pus? That's for the dentist, every time.

I write this from inside a certified essential oil unit in Panipat, where clove bud oil is one of the bottles we fill most.
