Dalchini Oil Uses: Toothache, Joints and Home Care

Quick answer: Dalchini oil is the Hindi name for cinnamon oil. In Indian homes it is traditionally used on cotton for temporary toothache relief, in warm massage oils for stiff joints, in diffusers and agarbatti for its festive smell, and as a natural room and cupboard freshener. The leaf type, rich in eugenol, is the better pick for most of these jobs. It must be diluted on skin and never swallowed.

Ask any dadi about dalchini and you'll get a list. Chai in winter, a stick in the biryani, a piece in the masala dabba. Ask about dalchini ka tel and the answer changes. Daant dard mein laga lo. Joints pe maalish karo.

Some of that wisdom holds up. Some of it needs a warning label.

I work at our certified manufacturing facility in Nimbri, Panipat, where we test and fill cinnamon leaf oil. Below are the traditional dalchini oil uses, which ones science supports and how to do each one safely.

What exactly is dalchini oil?

Dalchini is Hindi for cinnamon. Dalchini oil is the essential oil distilled from the cinnamon tree, either from the bark or from the leaves.

That difference matters a lot. Bark oil is mostly cinnamaldehyde, which is sweet, hot and very harsh on skin and gums. Leaf oil is mostly eugenol, the same numbing compound found in clove oil. Many Ayurvedic and Unani dalchini oils sold for teeth are leaf type or blended for exactly that reason. Our main cinnamon oil guide explains the types in full.

A quick note on the spice itself. Most dalchini sold in Indian kitchens is actually cassia, not true Ceylon cinnamon. Cassia is cheaper and stronger, and it has more coumarin. For cooking, use the spice. For the uses below, use a properly labelled essential oil.

Does dalchini oil help with toothache?

For temporary relief, the eugenol in dalchini leaf oil can help. Eugenol numbs nerve endings, which is why dentists have used clove based materials for over a century. Pharmacies in India sell small bottles of dalchini oil labelled for toothache for exactly this reason.

The safe way: dilute one drop of cinnamon leaf oil in about ten drops of a carrier oil like coconut or sesame. Dip a small cotton ball in it, squeeze out the extra and hold it against the painful tooth for a few minutes. Don't swallow it, don't soak your gums and don't repeat it many times a day.

Two warnings. Never use bark oil in the mouth, because cinnamaldehyde can burn gums and cheeks. And this is first aid, not treatment. Pain means a cavity, infection or cracked tooth, and that needs a dentist within a day or two. If you want the science of how eugenol numbs, read our eugenol for toothache guide. Clove is still the classic choice here, and our clove bud vs clove leaf oil for teeth comparison explains why.

Can dalchini oil help with joint and muscle pain?

Traditional Unani oils like raughan e darchini are used this way, mixed into olive or mustard oil and rubbed on stiff knees, backs and shoulders. Cinnamon feels warming on skin, and eugenol has mild pain relieving properties.

The evidence for cinnamon oil on joint pain in people is limited. What helps most is the massage itself, plus warmth. Still, a winter maalish with a little dalchini is comforting, and there's nothing wrong with that as long as it's dilute.

The blend: one drop of cinnamon leaf oil in 10 ml of sesame, mustard or sweet almond oil. That's about 0.5 percent. Rub it in for a few minutes. Avoid broken skin, and wash your hands well after, before touching your eyes.

How is dalchini oil used for fragrance at home?

This is where dalchini oil shines, and where risk is lowest.

Diffuser: two or three drops in water for 30 minutes. Mix one drop of dalchini with two of orange for a Diwali evening smell. Our diffuser oils collection has the citrus partners.

Cupboards and drawers: put three drops on a cotton pad or a small piece of terracotta and tuck it in a corner. It keeps clothes smelling warm and may help keep some insects away.

Puja and agarbatti: many incense makers use cinnamon in spicy and oriental blends. If you make your own dhoop or agarbatti, a small amount of leaf oil works well with sandalwood and clove.

Simmer pot: skip the oil and just boil water with a few dalchini sticks, cloves and orange peel. It's the safest and cheapest room scent there is.

Can dalchini oil keep mosquitoes and insects away?

Research reviews have shown cinnamon oil kills mosquito larvae in lab conditions, and some studies list cinnamaldehyde as a natural pest deterrent. Ants and cockroaches tend to avoid strong cinnamon smells too.

For home use, add 15 to 20 drops to a bucket of mopping water, or wipe door frames and windowsills with a diluted mix. It's a pleasant extra layer. It is not a replacement for a proper mosquito repellent during dengue season. Citronella has better evidence for that, and our citronella oil guide explains how to use it.

Is dalchini oil good for hair and skin?

A few drops in hair oil are popular online. Animal studies suggest cinnamon may support hair growth, but human evidence is missing. On skin, it's useful in body massage blends but risky on the face. Both topics deserve their own deep look, so see cinnamon oil for hair growth before you try it.

What do the safety numbers say?

The safety reference Essential Oil Safety (Tisserand and Young) sets cinnamon leaf oil's skin maximum at about 0.6 percent and bark oil's far lower. A 2015 Tisserand Institute survey of 345 users found undiluted cinnamon caused far more skin reactions, and people with seasonal allergies reacted about six times more often.

So, roughly 20 drops make 1 ml. One drop in 10 ml of carrier gives about 0.5 percent. That's your home ceiling for every skin use above.

What else do people ask about dalchini oil?

What is dalchini oil called in English?

Cinnamon oil. Labels may say cinnamon leaf oil or cinnamon bark oil depending on which part of the tree was distilled.

How do I use dalchini oil for toothache?

Mix one drop of cinnamon leaf oil with about ten drops of coconut or sesame oil, soak a small cotton ball, squeeze it and hold it on the tooth for a few minutes. Don't swallow it, and see a dentist soon.

Can I drink dalchini oil for weight loss or sugar control?

No. Essential oils for aromatherapy are not meant to be swallowed and can burn the throat and stomach. Any blood sugar research is on cinnamon spice or extracts under medical supervision, not on essential oil.

Is dalchini oil safe for children?

Avoid using it on children's skin or in their mouths. Even diffusing should be short and in a well ventilated room. Keep bottles out of reach.

Which is better for teeth, dalchini oil or clove oil?

Clove oil is the traditional first choice because clove bud oil is very high in eugenol. Cinnamon leaf oil is also eugenol rich and works similarly. Avoid cinnamon bark oil in the mouth.

Final Thoughts

Dalchini oil earns its place in an Indian home, mostly as a festive scent and a careful first aid for toothache. Use the leaf type, keep it dilute and treat it with the respect our grandmothers gave every strong remedy. These observations come from working inside a certified manufacturing facility, where the questions about dalchini ka tel never stop, especially once winter begins.
