Patchouli Essential Oil
Patchouli has not emerged in the world, it has a long history of recorded usage; over 200 years of provenance as a plant extract is a respectable history of any given extract. It is named after the Hindi term, Pacholi, which means to scent and that is what it has been doing since then. It was initially applied to stored fabrics to keep insects away. It was later discovered by people that it was also helpful to the skin, nerves and mood. The term spread and it established itself particularly in Asia.
The smell is polarizing. Burnt, beige, rich - some individuals are immediately put on the ground by it, whereas others take time to become accustomed to it. Anyway, it is one of the odder aromatherapy scents and can hardly be mixed up with any other.
Aromatherapy & Mood
Patchouli can be used as a stress or anxiety diffuser or as a massage mix. It does not elevate the spirits like citrus oils, but is rather a kind of a sedative effect. Good to unwind, turn down the mental chatter or even to de-stress a room. This is why it has been included in therapeutic blends.
Skin Care
Patchouli is used along with a carrier oil (coconut or jojoba) and can be used on dry or oily skin (and even on acne-prone skin). Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties contribute to blemishes and active breakouts, and frequent use can eliminate scars, even skin tone, and improve the hydration. It can be found in moisturizers, serums, and body oils because it truly nourishes and not lying on the surface.
Hair Care
Its antiseptic properties hold the dandruff in check on the scalp, and help make the scalp a cleaner place overall. When used regularly, hair seems to be healthier and shinier. Good to use in a hair oil or conditioner.
How to Use
Always with water, before applying on skin- it is strong and can be severe when in pure form. Good carrier oils are coconut, jojoba or almond carrier oils. Use in diffusers, massage oils, moisturizers, serums, or hair oils.
