Quick answer: After bath body oil works best on slightly damp skin, within two to three minutes of stepping out of the shower, because the oil seals in water already on the skin. Light carrier oils such as sweet almond, apricot seed, grapeseed, and jojoba absorb without a sticky finish. Use about a teaspoon for arms and legs, and add a few drops of lavender, geranium, or sweet orange essential oil per 30ml for scent, keeping essential oils at 2 percent or less.
After bath oils are the simplest body care step there is: one product, applied once, on skin that is already hydrated. This collection brings together light carrier oils and essential oils used to make after bath body oils for daily use and for custom blends.
Warm water leaves the skin hydrated but also strips some of its natural oils. Applying oil to damp skin traps that water under a thin lipid layer and slows moisture loss, which leaves skin softer for longer than applying oil to fully dry skin. It also means you need less product.
Sweet Almond Oil is the classic all-round choice for normal and dry skin. Apricot Seed Carrier Oil is lighter and suits warmer months. Grapeseed Carrier Oil absorbs fastest and suits humid weather or oilier skin. Golden Jojoba Oil feels silky and does not go rancid quickly, which makes it a good base for blends. Argan Carrier Oil is richer and suits very dry skin in winter.
Pour 30ml of a carrier oil into a clean bottle and add up to 12 drops of essential oil, which keeps the blend at about 2 percent. Lavender Essential Oil is calming for evening use, Geranium Essential Oil gives a soft floral scent, and sweet orange or tangerine add a fresh note. Cold-pressed citrus oils can be phototoxic, so use citrus blends at night or on skin that will stay covered.
About a teaspoon covers both arms and legs for most people. Warm it between your palms and press it in rather than rubbing hard. If skin still feels oily after five minutes, use less or switch to a lighter oil such as grapeseed.
