The Candelilla Wax Candle Making Kit is built around 250 g of candelilla wax, a vegan plant wax from the candelilla shrub that melts at about 68.5 to 72.5 °C, with fragrance oils, colours, wick, a silicone mould and tools. It is mainly blended with soy wax as a beeswax substitute to firm candles and give them a glossy finish. It suits vegan candle makers and sellers in warm regions.
A Candelilla Wax Candle Making Kit is a candle-making set built around candelilla wax, a vegan plant wax taken from the candelilla shrub (Euphorbia antisyphilitica) native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. RV Organica's kit includes 250 g of candelilla wax, two 10 ml candle fragrance oils, two 10 ml candle wax colours, 10 g of dried flowers, a 2 metre roll of pre-waxed cotton wick, a silicone candle mould, a spatula, a dropper and a pair of gloves, packed at our facility in Nimbri, Panipat, Haryana.
Candelilla wax is a natural wax that coats the stems of the candelilla shrub, where it protects the plant from desert heat. It is entirely plant-derived, so it is a common vegan alternative to beeswax. It melts at about 68.5 to 72.5 °C and is harder than beeswax, with a light yellowish colour and a glossy finish once set.
Candelilla is most often used to firm up softer waxes and give candles a smooth, glossy surface. Because it is harder than beeswax, many vegan makers use it in place of beeswax in a blend with soy wax, which keeps the candle plant-based while improving its shape and finish. Used on its own, it can be quite hard and may not burn as evenly, so blending is the practical approach. You can find soy wax to pair with it in our candle waxes collection.
Melt your base wax over a water bath, add the candelilla and stir with the spatula until it has fully dissolved. Start with a small share of candelilla in a test batch and adjust until the candle is firm without turning brittle. Let the blend cool slightly, add fragrance and colour with the dropper, fix a wick in the centre of the silicone mould and pour steadily. Press dried flowers onto the surface while it is still soft, let it set fully, and trim the wick to about 6 mm before lighting.
Candelilla melts at roughly 68.5 to 72.5 °C, which is higher than soy wax at about 49 to 52 °C, so your blend needs enough heat to dissolve the candelilla completely. Keep a thermometer handy and stir until the wax is clear and even. Candle fragrance is commonly used at 6 to 10 percent of total wax weight. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) places candles in Category 12, so pick candle-grade oils from our candle fragrance oils and follow the recommended usage.
Candelilla has a soft yellow tint, so it slightly warms the colours you add. Warm and deep shades come out well, and pastels may look a little creamy. Add dye drop by drop, test on a saucer, and let it set before deciding. More shades are in our candle dye range.
It suits makers who want fully vegan candles, people replacing beeswax in their recipes, and anyone who wants firmer, glossier moulded candles. It is also useful for candle sellers in warm regions, where softer candles can bend or sweat. Once your blend is settled, you can scale up with bulk wax and new shapes from our candle moulds.
Melt only over a water bath, never directly on a flame, and never leave hot wax unattended. Wear gloves, keep fragrance oils and colours away from children and pets, and do not apply fragrance oil to skin. Place lit candles on a heat-resistant surface away from drafts and anything flammable.
Is candelilla wax a good substitute for beeswax?
Yes, it is one of the most common vegan substitutes. It is harder than beeswax, so you usually need less of it to achieve the same firmness.
Can I make a candle with candelilla wax only?
It is possible but not ideal, because pure candelilla is hard and may burn unevenly. Blending it with soy wax gives better results.
Is candelilla wax vegan?
Yes. It comes from a plant, the candelilla shrub, and contains no animal-derived ingredients.
