Galangal essential oil is steam distilled from the rhizomes of Alpinia galanga, also called greater galangal, and smells fresh, spicy, ginger-like and a little camphoraceous. What is galangal essential oil and how is it made?

The oil comes from Alpinia galanga, known as greater galangal. It is a different plant from lesser galangal (Alpinia officinarum), so check the botanical name when you compare suppliers. The rhizomes are dried, sliced and steam distilled, and the dried rhizome gives only about 0.2 to 1.5 percent oil by weight, which is part of why galangal oil costs more than most spice oils.

The scent is fresh, spicy and ginger-like, with a camphoraceous, slightly peppery edge. Two groups of molecules shape it: 1,8-cineole, which gives the cool, clean lift, and methyl cinnamate, which adds a warm, fruity sweetness. Typical constituents in our oil include 1,8-cineole at about 20 to 35 percent, alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, camphene, methyl cinnamate and beta-farnesene. Published analyses vary widely with origin and harvest, so the COA for your batch is the figure to rely on.

How do you use galangal essential oil in a diffuser and in massage blends?

The aroma is strong, so start with one or two drops in an ultrasonic diffuser and add more only if the room needs it. It works best in spicy or herbal blends, and you can also browse our diffuser oils for ready mixes.

Never apply it neat. For body massage blends, dilute to about 1 percent or less, roughly six drops in 30 ml of carrier oil, using a base from our carrier oils. Patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use. Because of its 1,8-cineole content, keep it away from the faces of young children. Galangal has a long history in traditional kitchens and home practice, but we do not claim the oil treats any condition.

Can you use galangal essential oil in soap, candles and perfumery?

Yes, with a few checks. In soap, galangal suits spicy, fresh and masculine scents, and you should make a small test batch because spice oils behave differently from recipe to recipe. Our soap bases are an easy place to start.

In candles, note the flash point. Ours is above 56°C, which is lower than many floral oils, so add it at the cooler end of your wax's recommended pour range and never overheat it. In perfumery, galangal sits in the heart of a blend and lifts spicy, oriental and incense accords. It pairs well with ginger, cardamom, black pepper, lemongrass, cedarwood, clove, frankincense and vetiver, and more spices are in our spice oils. The botanical name is Alpinia galanga and the oil is produced by steam distillation of the rhizomes. Origin is India, Thailand or Indonesia depending on the batch. It is a thin, colourless to pale yellow liquid with a specific gravity of 0.916 g/ml, a refractive index of 1.488 and a flash point above 56°C. The acid value is up to 2.0 mg KOH/g, and the shelf life is two years. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water. A COA and MSDS are available, and we suggest reading both before you formulate.

How should you store galangal essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from heat and direct sunlight, ideally in amber glass. Oils rich in terpenes slowly oxidise when exposed to air, so close the cap right after use and retire any bottle that smells flat or sharp. Stored well, it keeps for two years.

Is galangal essential oil safe to use?

It is for external use only, so do not swallow it. Dilute it before skin contact, patch test first, and keep it away from the eyes and from the faces of young children. Keep the bottle out of reach of children and pets, and if you are pregnant, nursing or under medical care, check with your doctor first. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
