Guaiacwood Essential Oil is steam distilled from the heartwood of Bulnesia sarmientoi, with a warm, smoky, woody and softly rosy-balsamic aroma. It is used as a long-lasting base note and fixative in perfumes and attars, and in incense-style blends, soaps, candles and diffusers. It is a viscous liquid that may solidify in cool weather, with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.
Guaiacwood Essential Oil is the aromatic oil recovered from the dense heartwood of the guaiacwood tree by steam distillation. RV Organica’s Guaiacwood Essential Oil is a pale yellow to amber, medium to thick liquid with a smoky, tea-rose woody scent, packed at our facility in Nimbri, Panipat, Haryana, and offered in sizes from 100 ml to 25 kg.
Guaiacwood comes from Bulnesia sarmientoi, a slow-growing hardwood native to the dry Gran Chaco forests of South America. Its heartwood is so dense that it sinks in water. The wood is chipped, and steam is passed through the chips for many hours. The steam carries the aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used.
The tree is often called palo santo, but that name also belongs to an unrelated species, Bursera graveolens, which gives a different, citrusy oil. Guaiacwood oil should also not be confused with guaiacol, a separate chemical. Our specification lists guaiol at 35 to 55 percent and bulnesol at 12 to 25 percent, along with β-bulnesene and γ-eudesmol. Guaiol is the compound behind the oil’s smooth, smoky, tea-rose character.
Because Bulnesia sarmientoi is listed under CITES Appendix II, international trade in its wood and oil is permit-controlled. When you buy any guaiacwood oil, ask the supplier for batch documents. COA and MSDS can be requested from RV Organica for each batch, and the COA shows the composition of that batch.
Guaiacwood smells warm, smoky and woody, with a creamy, balsamic sweetness and a soft, tea-like rosy note, a little like a campfire softened with violet and vanilla. It is smoother and sweeter than vetiver and less sharp than cedarwood. It is a slow, lasting base note that gives depth and a quiet smokiness to a blend.
Guaiacwood is a classic base note and fixative, and it bridges woody and floral accords. It pairs naturally with rose, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, frankincense, labdanum, cedarwood and oudh. Use it in roll-ons, solid perfumes, incense blends and attar-style compositions, and explore our attars collection for ideas on traditional blending. A little goes a long way, and the blend deepens as it rests.
The oil can set in cool weather, so warm the closed bottle gently in a bowl of warm water until it flows. Add one or two drops to a diffuser for a smoky, grounding, incense-like atmosphere that suits meditation corners, yoga spaces and quiet evenings. It combines well with sandalwood and frankincense for a classic temple-style blend. Clean the diffuser regularly, because thick oils can leave a residue.
Always dilute guaiacwood oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. The right ratio depends on how much you are making and where it will be used, and our essential oil dilution calculator works it out for you. Once diluted, it gives body oils, balms and massage blends a warm, smoky and lasting fragrance. Do a patch test first and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin.
Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. The oil is pale yellow to amber, so it can lightly tint pale bases. In candles, test a small batch first, because thick, heavy oils can behave differently in wax and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. Guaiacwood suits woody, smoky, masculine and oriental candle and soap blends.
The botanical name is Bulnesia sarmientoi, the CAS number is 8016-23-7 and the FEMA number is 2534. The oil has a relative density of 1.012 at 25°C, a refractive index of 1.508, a flash point above 110°C, an acid value of up to 3.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.5 percent. It is a viscous liquid of medium to thick consistency that may solidify below 15°C, pale yellow to amber, with a characteristic warm, woody, smoky and rosy-balsamic odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.
Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Cool storage may thicken or set the oil, which is normal, and gentle warming in warm water restores its flow. Never heat the bottle directly. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.
Guaiacwood essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, do a patch test first, and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin. Keep it away from children and pets, and consult a doctor before use if you are pregnant or nursing. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
