Nagarmotha Essential Oil, also sold as cypriol oil, is steam distilled from the roots and tubers of Cyperus scariosus, with a deep, earthy, woody, smoky and spicy aroma. It is used as a base note in attars, perfumes, incense, soaps, diffusers and herbal hair oils. It is a pale yellow to amber, medium-consistency liquid with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

What is nagarmotha essential oil and how is it made?

Nagarmotha is a sedge that grows in damp ground across India, and its tubers have been used in Indian perfumery and incense for centuries. The roots and tubers are harvested, cleaned and distilled with steam. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. The same oil is called cypriol in the international perfume trade, and the two names refer to the same material.

Nagarmotha is often confused with its relative Cyperus rotundus, commonly called nut grass, whose roots give a related but different oil. Our oil is from Cyperus scariosus. Our specification lists cyperene at 15 to 25 percent and α-cyperone at 10 to 20 percent, along with seychellene and patchoulenone. Nagarmotha smells deep, earthy and woody, with a smoky, slightly leathery, spicy character and a sweet, dry-earth finish like rain on warm soil. It is darker and smokier than vetiver and less sweet than patchouli. It is a liquid of medium consistency, pale yellow to amber, with a characteristic earthy, woody, smoky and spicy odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.

How should you store nagarmotha essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Cool storage may thicken the oil slightly, and gentle warming in a bowl of warm water restores its flow.
