RV Organica’s Roman Chamomile Essential Oil is steam distilled from Roman chamomile flower heads, packed at our facility in Nimbri, Panipat, Haryana, and offered in sizes from 50 ml to 10 kg.
Roman chamomile is a low-growing, creeping herb of the daisy family, with small white-and-yellow flowers that smell strongly of apples. Its botanical name is Chamaemelum nobile, also listed under the older name Anthemis nobilis. The flower heads are harvested and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. The flowers yield only a small amount of oil, which is why Roman chamomile is one of the pricier essential oils.
It is a different plant from German chamomile, Matricaria recutita, which gives a deeper blue oil rich in chamazulene. Our chamomile essential oil is the other chamomile in the range. Roman chamomile is unusual because most of its aroma comes from esters of angelic and methacrylic acid. Our specification lists isobutyl angelate at 20 to 40 percent, along with isoamyl methacrylate, isoamyl angelate, camphene and pinene. These esters give the oil its characteristic sweet, fruity, apple-like scent, which is what the name chamomile means in Greek, earth apple. The COA for your batch shows its exact composition.
Roman chamomile smells sweet, fruity and warm, like ripe apples and dried flowers, with a soft herbal, hay-like and slightly honeyed undertone. It is lighter and fruitier than German chamomile, which is deeper, drier and more medicinal. It is a gentle, comforting scent that blends smoothly with almost anything.
Add a few drops to a diffuser for a soft, sweet and herbal atmosphere. It suits bedrooms, living rooms and quiet evenings. For a classic calm blend, pair it with lavender essential oil, or with neroli essential oil for a delicate floral one. Our relaxation oils collection has more ideas for pairing.
Always dilute Roman chamomile oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. The right ratio depends on how much you are making and where it will be used, and our essential oil dilution calculator works it out for you. Once diluted, it adds a soft, apple-herbal fragrance to face oils, serums, balms, body oils, massage blends and bath products. Do a patch test first and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin.
Yes. In pillow sprays and linen mists, it gives a gentle, sweet, bedtime fragrance. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. In candles, test a small batch first, because delicate scents are light and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works as a sweet, fruity-herbal heart note, and it pairs well with lavender, rose, geranium, neroli, bergamot, clary sage, frankincense and ylang ylang.
The botanical name is Chamaemelum nobile, the CAS number is 8015-92-7 and the FEMA number is 2272. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.898, a refractive index of 1.440, a flash point above 68°C, an acid value of up to 2.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, pale blue to pale yellow, with a characteristic sweet, fruity, apple-like and warm chamomile odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water. Batch-specific values are given on the COA.
Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.
Roman chamomile essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, do a patch test first, and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin. Avoid it if you are allergic to plants in the daisy family, such as ragweed, marigold or chamomile. Keep it away from children and pets, and consult a doctor before use if you are pregnant or nursing. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
