What is ambrette seed essential oil and how is it made?

Ambrette, also called musk mallow, is a tropical plant of the hibiscus family, Abelmoschus moschatus, grown for its small, grey-brown seeds that smell faintly of musk. The seeds are dried and crushed, and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. The aroma of the seeds can also be captured as a concrete or absolute by solvent extraction, which is a different product from this steam distilled oil.

Its scent comes from fatty, waxy and sweet compounds, including farnesol, farnesyl acetate and a natural musk-like lactone called ambrettolide. Farnesol is among the fragrance allergens that EU cosmetics rules require makers to declare on labels above set thresholds, so formulators should check labelling requirements for their market.
