Aquilaria Agallocha Essential Oil, also known as agarwood oil or oud oil, is the aromatic oil distilled from the resin-rich heartwood of Aquilaria trees, with a deep, warm, woody, sweet, balsamic and smoky aroma. It is used in very small amounts in luxury perfumes, attars, incense blends and diffusers, where it lasts for hours. What is aquilaria agallocha essential oil and how is it made?

Agarwood is the dark, resin-saturated heartwood that forms inside certain Aquilaria trees when they are injured or infected by a mould. The healthy wood is pale and nearly scentless. Over years, the tree responds by producing a dark, fragrant resin, and only this resinous wood is distilled for oil. Aquilaria agallocha is the name used for the Indian agarwood tree, and botanists often treat it as a synonym of Aquilaria malaccensis. The trade also uses the names agar, oudh, oud and gaharu, and all of them refer to the same family of fragrant material. The resinous wood is soaked and distilled with steam or water, and the oil that carries over is collected and separated from the water. Its aroma comes from sesquiterpene compounds such as agarospirol and jinkoh-eremol, which give agarwood its deep, woody, balsamic character. The COA for your batch shows its exact composition.

Genuine agarwood oil is among the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, and all Aquilaria species are listed under CITES Appendix II, so international trade requires permits. Agarwood oil smells deep, warm and woody, with a sweet, balsamic heart, a smoky, slightly leathery edge and a rich, animalic-resinous depth that develops over hours. It is darker and more complex than sandalwood, with a mix of honey, forest floor, incense smoke and aged wood. It is a polarising, powerful scent that perfumers use in tiny amounts, because even a drop changes a whole blend.

Agarwood is a base note and fixative.
