Blue Tansy Essential Oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of Tanacetum annuum, with a sweet, herbal, camphoraceous and slightly fruity aroma and a striking deep blue colour from chamazulene. It is used in small amounts in diffuser blends, diluted face and body oils, balms, soaps, candles and herbal perfumery. It is a thin, deep blue to inky blue liquid that can stain, with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

What is blue tansy essential oil and how is it made?

Blue tansy, also called annual tansy, is a small yellow-flowered herb of the daisy family, Tanacetum annuum, grown mainly in the Mediterranean region. The flowering tops are harvested and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. The blue colour does not exist in the fresh plant. It forms during distillation, when a precursor called matricin in the flowers is converted by heat into chamazulene, a deep blue compound. The same process colours German chamomile oil.

Blue tansy is not common tansy, Tanacetum vulgare, which is a different plant with a different chemistry and is not used the same way. What does blue tansy essential oil smell like?

Blue tansy smells sweet, herbal and fruity, with a cool, camphoraceous freshness and a soft apple-like and slightly honeyed note. It is gentler and sweeter than most camphor-containing oils and brighter than chamomile. It is a distinctive, calm-feeling scent that is easy to place in spa, skincare and herbal blends.

How do you use blue tansy essential oil in a diffuser?

Add one or two drops to a diffuser for a fresh, sweet and herbal atmosphere. The scent is rich, so a small amount is enough. It suits bedrooms, meditation corners and evening routines. For a soft floral-herbal blend, pair it with lavender essential oil or chamomile essential oil. For a fresh, golden herbal mix, add a little helichrysum essential oil.

How do you use blue tansy essential oil in face oils and body oils?

Always dilute blue tansy oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. Can you use blue tansy essential oil in soap, candles and perfume?

Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. The colour is strong and can tint bases, and it can temporarily stain skin, fabric and surfaces, so work carefully and test a small batch first. In candles, test a small batch as well, because herbal scents are delicate and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works as a sweet, herbal heart note and pairs well with lavender, German chamomile, rose, frankincense, helichrysum, cedarwood and ylang ylang.

What are the specifications of blue tansy essential oil?

The botanical name is Tanacetum annuum. The oil has a flash point above 62°C, an acid value of up to 2.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, deep blue to inky blue, with a characteristic sweet, herbal, camphoraceous and slightly fruity odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water. Batch-specific values are given on the COA.

How should you store blue tansy essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Chamazulene is sensitive to light and air and can fade with age, so close the cap straight after each use. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.

Is blue tansy essential oil safe to use?

Blue tansy essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, do a patch test first, and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin.
