Calendula Essential Oil is steam distilled from the flowers of Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold, with a warm, herbaceous, floral and slightly musky aroma. It is used in small, diluted amounts in face and body oils, balms, soaps, creams and herbal fragrance blends. It is a thin, pale yellow to golden yellow liquid with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

What is calendula essential oil and how is it made?

Calendula, also called pot marigold, is a bright orange and yellow flowering herb of the daisy family, native to the Mediterranean region and grown around the world. Most products sold as calendula oil are not essential oils. They are infused oils, made by steeping marigold petals in a carrier oil such as sunflower or olive oil, which gives a golden, mild oil. Calendula essential oil is different. The flowers are loaded into a still and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. Flowers give only a very small amount of oil, so true calendula essential oil is a specialty ingredient. No solvents are used.

Our specification lists α-cadinol, τ-cadinol, α-muurolol, caryophyllene oxide and δ-cadinene as the main constituents. These sesquiterpene compounds give the oil its warm, woody-herbal, slightly musky depth, and they are quite different from the colourful carotenoids and flavonoids found in the petals, which stay behind in infused oils and extracts. What does calendula essential oil smell like?

Calendula smells warm, herbaceous and floral, with a woody, slightly musky and faintly resinous character, and a hint of dried hay and flowers. It is deeper and more earthy than chamomile and less sweet than rose. It is a quiet, comforting scent that blends smoothly into herbal and floral compositions.

How do you use calendula essential oil in face oils and body oils?

Always dilute calendula essential oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. How do you use calendula essential oil in a diffuser?

Add a few drops to a diffuser for a soft, warm and herbal atmosphere. It suits bedrooms, living rooms and quiet evenings. For a gentle floral-herbal mix, blend it with lavender essential oil or chamomile essential oil. For a deeper, golden blend, add a little helichrysum essential oil.

Can you use calendula essential oil in soap, candles and perfume?

Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. In candles and room sprays, test a small batch first, because soft herbal scents are delicate and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works as a warm, woody-floral base-to-heart note, and it pairs well with lavender, chamomile, rose, frankincense, neroli, helichrysum, geranium and sandalwood.

What are the specifications of calendula essential oil?

The botanical name is Calendula officinalis and the CAS number is 84776-23-8. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.906, a refractive index of 1.472, a flash point above 68°C, an acid value of up to 2.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, pale yellow to golden yellow, with a characteristic warm, herbaceous, floral and slightly musky odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.

How should you store calendula essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.
