What is frangipani essential oil and how is it made?

Frangipani is the common name of Plumeria, a tropical tree grown across India and warm regions worldwide, with waxy white, pink and yellow flowers that smell strongest in the evening. The botanical name is Plumeria rubra, also written Plumeria acutifolia. In India it is sometimes called champa, but it is a different plant from golden champaca, Magnolia champaca, which gives a separate oil. Plumeria flowers are delicate and give very little oil, and heat damages their scent, so the aroma is captured by dissolving it from fresh blossoms in a solvent, which is then removed to leave a rich, concentrated absolute.

The scent comes from a blend of floral and creamy compounds, including linalool, geraniol, farnesol, benzyl benzoate and methyl benzoate. Frangipani smells sweet, rich and creamy, with a tropical floral heart, a soft waxy-honeyed warmth and a hint of coconut-like smoothness.
