What is ginger root essential oil and how is it made?

Ginger root essential oil comes from the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale, the underground stems of the ginger plant. The rhizomes are cleaned and steam is passed through them, carrying the volatile aroma compounds away. When the steam cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. Ginger belongs to the same plant family as cardamom and turmeric, which is why the oil shares their warm, spicy character.

Its scent comes mainly from zingiberene at 25 to 35 percent and β-sesquiphellandrene at 8 to 15 percent, with ar-curcumene, camphene and β-phellandrene also present. Zingiberene is the compound behind ginger’s warm, woody-spicy depth. ISO 16928:2014 specifies characteristics of ginger oil from India, China and West Africa for assessing its quality, and the COA for your batch is the document to read against it.

What does ginger root essential oil smell like?

Ginger oil smells warm, spicy and fresh, with a woody, slightly lemony edge and a sweet, earthy base. It is more aromatic and rounder than the smell of fresh ginger in the kitchen, with less sharpness. It adds energy and heat to a blend, which is why perfumers use it as a spicy lift in oriental, woody and citrus compositions.

How do you use ginger root essential oil in a diffuser?

Add a few drops to a diffuser to fill a room with a warm, spicy and energising aroma. It suits cooler months, kitchens, entrance areas and workspaces. Can you use ginger root essential oil in soap, hair oils, candles and perfume?

Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. In hair oils and scalp blends, use it diluted in a suitable carrier oil. In candles, test a small batch first, because spice scents are strong and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works as a bright, warm spice note and pairs well with sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood, frankincense, bergamot, black pepper, cardamom and neroli.

The botanical name is Zingiber officinale, the CAS number is 8007-08-7 and the FEMA number is 2522. The oil has a relative density of 0.877 at 25°C, a refractive index of 1.489, a flash point above 65°C, an acid value of up to 2.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, pale yellow to light amber, with a characteristic warm, spicy, fresh ginger odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.

How should you store ginger root essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.

Is ginger root essential oil safe to use?
