Myrrh Essential Oil (Commiphora myrrha): Steam Distilled Warm Resinous Oil for Perfumery, Incense Blends, Diffuser and Body Care

Myrrh Essential Oil is steam distilled from the oleo-gum resin of Commiphora myrrha, with a warm, resinous, balsamic, earthy and slightly spicy aroma. It is used in perfumery, attars, diffusers, incense-style blends, diluted balms and body oils, soaps and candles. It is a pale yellow to amber, medium to thick liquid with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

Myrrh Essential Oil is the aromatic oil recovered from myrrh resin, the dried tears that seep from the bark of the myrrh tree, by steam distillation. What is myrrh essential oil and how is it made?

Myrrh comes from Commiphora myrrha, a thorny tree of the arid regions of northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. When the bark is cut, it releases a pale sap that hardens into reddish-brown tears of oleo-gum resin. These tears have been burned as incense and used in perfumery for thousands of years. To make the oil, the resin is crushed and steam is passed through it. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected.

Our specification lists curzerene at 20 to 35 percent as the main compound, along with β-elemene, lindestrene, furanoeudesma-1,3-diene and δ-cadinene. These sesquiterpene compounds give myrrh its dense, earthy, slightly smoky depth. Myrrh should not be confused with opoponax, also called sweet myrrh, which comes from a different tree and smells sweeter. The COA for your batch shows its exact composition.

What does myrrh essential oil smell like?

Myrrh smells warm, resinous and earthy, with a balsamic, slightly spicy and faintly smoky character. It is darker and drier than frankincense, with a bitter-sweet, medicinal-herbal edge that softens as it dries down. It is the scent of temples, ancient incense and old libraries, deep and quiet rather than bright. In blends it adds weight, richness and a long-lasting base.

How do you use myrrh essential oil in a diffuser?

Add a few drops to a diffuser for a grounding, incense-like atmosphere. It suits meditation corners, prayer spaces, quiet evenings and winter rooms. The oil is thick and the scent is strong, so start with a small amount. How do you use myrrh essential oil in body oils and balms?

Always dilute myrrh oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. If the oil has thickened, warm the closed bottle gently in warm water until it flows. Can you use myrrh essential oil in perfume, soap and candles?

Yes. In perfumery, myrrh is a classic base note for oriental, amber, woody and incense-style compositions, and it fixes lighter notes. It pairs well with frankincense, sandalwood, rose, lavender, cedarwood, oudh and patchouli. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. In candles, test a small batch first, because resinous oils can behave differently in wax and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size.

What are the specifications of myrrh essential oil?

The botanical name is Commiphora myrrha, the CAS number is 8016-37-3 and the FEMA number is 2765. The origin is India, Somalia and Ethiopia. The oil has a specific gravity of 1.014, a refractive index of 1.523, a flash point above 95°C, an acid value of up to 5.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.5 percent. It is a viscous liquid with a medium to thick consistency, pale yellow to amber, with a characteristic warm, resinous, balsamic, earthy and spicy odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.

How should you store myrrh essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Cool storage may thicken the oil, which is normal, and gentle warming in a bowl of warm water restores its flow. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.

Is myrrh essential oil safe to use?

Myrrh essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it, and do not use it as a mouth rinse. Always dilute it in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, do a patch test first, and avoid direct sunlight on treated skin. Keep it away from children and pets, and avoid use during pregnancy. If you are nursing or have any medical condition, consult a doctor before use.
