Oregano Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Origanum vulgare, with a strong, warm, spicy and herbaceous aroma led by carvacrol. It is very concentrated and is used in small, heavily diluted amounts in soaps, candles, room sprays, diffuser blends and herbal fragrance work. It is a pale yellow to light brown, free-flowing liquid with a 24 month shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.
Oregano Essential Oil is the aromatic oil recovered from oregano leaves by steam distillation. RV Organica’s Oregano Essential Oil is an Indian-origin, pale yellow to light brown, mobile liquid with a bold, pungent, herbal scent, packed at our facility in Nimbri, Panipat, Haryana, and offered in sizes from 100 ml to 25 kg.
Oregano is a hardy aromatic herb of the mint family, grown for its leaves and flowering tops, which are dried or harvested fresh. Steam is passed through the plant material and carries the volatile aroma compounds away. When the steam cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. It is the concentrated essential oil of the herb, which is a different product from the cooking herb and from the diluted oregano oil capsules and drops sold in carrier oils.
Oregano is often confused with its relatives. Sweet marjoram, Origanum majorana, is gentler and sweeter, and our sweet marjoram essential oil is a separate product. Mexican oregano, Lippia graveolens, is an unrelated plant with a different oil. Our specification lists carvacrol at 60 to 80 percent, with p-cymene, γ-terpinene, β-caryophyllene and thymol in smaller amounts. Carvacrol gives the oil its sharp, spicy, medicinal-herbal punch and also makes it a strong skin irritant, which is why heavy dilution is essential. The COA for your batch shows its exact composition.
Oregano smells strong, warm and spicy, with a pungent, herbaceous, slightly peppery and woody character, like crushed dried oregano at full strength. It is far more intense than the herb in your kitchen and has a sharp, almost smoky edge. In tiny amounts it adds a rustic, earthy, Mediterranean note to a blend.
Use very little. One small drop in a diffuser, in a well-ventilated room, is usually enough, because the scent is overpowering when overused. It is best blended with gentler oils so that it adds depth without dominating. Pair it with lavender essential oil for a softer herbal mix, or with rosemary essential oil for a bright, herbaceous one.
Always dilute oregano oil heavily before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. The right ratio depends on how much you are making and where it will be used, and our essential oil dilution calculator works it out for you. Use a much lower ratio than you would for a gentle oil, do a patch test first, and keep it away from the eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes. Never use it neat.
Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at a very low level and keep within your formulation’s recommended limits. The oil is pale yellow to light brown, so it can lightly tint pale bases. In candles and DIY room sprays, test a small batch first, because strong herbal scents can dominate and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works only in trace amounts as a rustic herbal accent, and it pairs well with lavender, rosemary, cedarwood, bergamot, eucalyptus and thyme.
The botanical name is Origanum vulgare, the CAS number is 8007-11-2 and the FEMA number is 2828. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.935 to 0.960 at 25°C, a refractive index of 1.498 to 1.520 at 20°C, a flash point of 62°C or higher, an acid value of up to 2.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.5 percent. It is a mobile, free-flowing liquid, pale yellow to light brown, with a strong, warm, spicy and herbaceous odour. The shelf life is 24 months from the date of manufacture, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.
Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full 24 month shelf life.
Oregano essential oil is for external use only. Do not ingest it. It is high in carvacrol and can strongly irritate the skin, eyes and mucous membranes, so always use it heavily diluted in a carrier oil, never neat, and do a patch test first. Avoid direct sunlight on treated skin. Keep it away from children and pets, and avoid use during pregnancy. If you are nursing or have any medical condition, consult a doctor before use. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Yes. The oil is available in 100 ml, 500 ml, 1 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg and 25 kg packs, which suits home users, small makers and manufacturers. COA and MSDS can be requested for each batch. For wholesale or private label enquiries, write to info@rvorganica.com.
