Rose Geranium Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stems and flowers of Pelargonium graveolens, with a sweet, rosy, floral aroma and soft green undertones. It is used diluted in perfumes, soaps, face and body oils, hair oils, candles and diffuser blends, where it gives a lush, rose-like heart at a fraction of the cost of rose oil. It is a pale yellow to olive green, thin liquid with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

What is rose geranium essential oil and how is it made?

Rose geranium is a fragrant, soft-leaved shrub native to southern Africa and now grown for its oil in India, Egypt and other warm regions. Its leaves, stems and flowers are harvested and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. Despite its name, the plant is not a true geranium. Garden geraniums with that common name are botanically Pelargonium, a different genus from the wild cranesbill Geranium, and the oil comes from Pelargonium graveolens, sometimes listed under the name Pelargonium roseum.

The name rose geranium is often used for the rosier, sweeter style of the oil, while our geranium essential oil leans more green and minty. Our specification lists citronellol at 18 to 35 percent and geraniol at 10 to 25 percent, along with linalool, citronellyl formate and isomenthone. Citronellol and geraniol are the same compounds that make up much of the scent of rose oil, which is why this oil smells so rosy. ISO 4731:2012 specifies characteristics of essential oil of geranium from Pelargonium species commonly known as Pelargonium graveolens, and the COA for your batch is the document to read against it. Geraniol, citronellol and linalool are among the fragrance allergens that EU cosmetics rules require makers to declare on labels above set thresholds.

What does rose geranium essential oil smell like?

Rose geranium smells sweet, rosy and floral, with a soft green, leafy edge and a faint minty-fruity lift. It is greener and less heavy than true rose oil, and it adds a clean, garden-fresh floral note without becoming sugary. It is easy to blend and easy to like, which makes it a staple in floral and herbal perfumery.

How do you use rose geranium essential oil in a diffuser?

Add a few drops to a diffuser for a sweet, rosy and fresh atmosphere. It suits bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms and workspaces, and it works well in any season. For a classic floral bouquet, pair it with rose essential oil, or with clary sage essential oil for a smooth, herbal-floral mix. It also blends well with lavender, bergamot, frankincense, sandalwood, ylang ylang and jasmine.

How do you use rose geranium essential oil in face oils, body oils and hair oils?

Always dilute rose geranium oil before it touches the skin or scalp. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. Can you use rose geranium essential oil in soap, candles and perfume?

Yes. In soap and body care bases, add it at the level your formulation recommends. The oil is pale yellow to olive green, so it can lightly tint pale bases. In candles and room sprays, test a small batch first, because floral scents are delicate and scent throw changes with wax type and wick size. In perfumery it works as a rose-like heart note and a natural, affordable partner or extender for rose accords, and it pairs well with rose, lavender, clary sage, bergamot, frankincense, sandalwood, ylang ylang and jasmine. What are the specifications of rose geranium essential oil?

The botanical name is Pelargonium graveolens (also listed as Pelargonium roseum), the CAS number is 8000-46-2 and the FEMA number is 2508. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.888, a refractive index of 1.463, a flash point above 72°C, an acid value of up to 3.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, pale yellow to olive green, with a characteristic sweet, rosy, floral and slightly green odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water.

How should you store rose geranium essential oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct sunlight. Close the cap straight after each use, because air and light speed up oxidation and dull the aroma over time, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate the skin. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.
