Siberian Fir Needle Oil is steam distilled from the needles and young twigs of Abies sibirica, with a fresh, crisp, balsamic and deep forest-like aroma. It is used in diffusers, diluted massage and body oils, candles, room sprays, soaps and men’s grooming blends, and it is a favourite in winter and festive fragrances. It is a colourless to pale yellow, thin liquid with a two year shelf life, and COA and MSDS are available on request.

What is siberian fir needle oil and how is it made?

Siberian fir is a tall, slender evergreen of the cold northern forests, with soft, flat needles and a clean, sweet, balsamic smell. The needles and young twigs are harvested and steam is passed through them. The steam carries the volatile aroma compounds away, and when it cools, the oil separates from the water and is collected. No solvents are used. It is a different plant from the silver fir, Abies alba, and the balsam fir, Abies balsamea, and from the Siberian pine, Pinus sibirica, which is often called Siberian cedar and gives an oil with another profile.

Its scent comes mainly from bornyl acetate at 35 to 55 percent, with camphene at 10 to 18 percent, α-pinene at 8 to 15 percent, β-pinene and borneol. Bornyl acetate is the compound that gives fir oil its soft, sweet, balsamic depth and sets it apart from the sharper, more turpentine-like pine oils. How do you use siberian fir needle oil in a diffuser?

Add a few drops to a diffuser for a crisp, forest-fresh atmosphere. It suits living rooms, studies, entrances and winter evenings, and it blends smoothly with other woody and fresh oils. Always dilute fir oil before it touches the skin. It dissolves in alcohol and fixed oils but not in water, so mix it into a carrier oil first. The botanical name is Abies sibirica and the CAS number is 8021-29-2. The oil has a specific gravity of 0.904, a refractive index of 1.472, a flash point above 38°C, an acid value of up to 1.0 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.3 percent. It is a thin liquid, colourless to pale yellow, with a characteristic fresh, crisp, deep forest, balsamic and woody odour. The shelf life is two years, and the oil is soluble in alcohol and fixed oils and insoluble in water. Batch-specific values are given on the COA.

How should you store siberian fir needle oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat, flames and direct sunlight. The flash point is low, so store it away from ignition sources. Conifer oils oxidise with age, and oxidised oil is more likely to irritate the skin, so close the cap straight after each use and use the oil within its shelf life. Stored well, the oil keeps its quality for the full two year shelf life.
